1909 Problems – Part 9: Flimsy

Should we really be surprised anymore? Bologna have opened up a commanding 13 point lead at the top of Serie A and pundits are wondering if the title could be won by Easter. Perhaps European commitments will distract Black’s men but otherwise, what is stopping them doing the treble? Only old father time catching up with Baggio, Emmers and co…it gets us all eventually.

Jimbo has set the scene but it is looking good for us in the league.

What I hope will be a relentless pursuit of glory begins with a win at Genoa.

Don’t adjust your screen, this is a different game just with the same colour kits and the same first goalscorer. It actually takes us extra time to see off Cagliari.

Serie B Cagliari at that. Glad to be in the final.

Milan come and take a point. A curious game really which could have gone either way on chances.

A surprisingly competent win over Roma follows. We have too few games like this.

This is a great time to put in our performance of the season. Perhaps any season. A 5-1 win in Dortmund should ensure we appear in the semis after the formalities of a second leg in a few weeks.

An edgy performance sees off Salerntina.

I didn’t see this coming. A dire performance from start to finish against Piacenza. Sereni gets man of the match as usual but we can’t claim to deserve anything.

There are those formalities.

As usual, there isn’t a good tie to be had.

PSG, I suppose it’s not Barcelona.

Fiorentina probably deserved to win this but it’s Nevland’s turn to be on a hot streak and we’re edging closer to that title.

Then this. Poor again on the road.

Maybe we had one eye on the Champions League. Another strange game where we lead twice but get pegged back on both occasion. Baggio is sent off after curiously finding himself denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Work to do in Paris.

Lecce are bottom of the table but it’s fair to say the wheels are falling off a bit.

That lead was once about 11 points I’m sure. Juventus are at that point of the season where they don’t miss.

The Coppa final is over 2 legs and there’s all manner of curses around two legged finals on this game. This finishes 3-3 despite their keeper being sent off early on and I dread to think what will happen in the return leg.

Hopefully it goes like this league game does, where Baggio, now 33, is carrying us almost single handedly in our pursuit of domestic and European bliss. However, he’ll be suspended in Paris in a few days…

The team we have to put out in Paris is a sight to behold. I choose a 3 man defence but we’re without Baggio, Hanke, Davids, Tommy Svindal Larsen, Barnes…

Oh what a night. We take an early two goal lead and then sit in getting pummelled for 70 minutes, conceding twice along the way. In extra time Legwinski capitalises on a spill by Antonioli but Nevland, introduced off the bench, heads in a corner and we win on away goals. Wow.

It’ll be Barcelona in the final, in Madrid no less.

Back to Serie A business and a tight win at Sampdoria steadies our title charge.

Juventus dropping points is a massive help.

Just one win needed now.

The Coppa Italia is coming home! The second leg is nowhere near as much trouble as the first.

A fly in the ointment as we blow an early lead against Inter.

Juventus win and it’s down to the final day.

Luckily, Roberto Baggio is in excellent form and despite seeing his penalty saved, scores two others and leads us to the double.

Not vintage but we got there in the end.

Can we make it a treble? We’re still without Baggio and now also Shalimov but the lads, oh these lads, they defend like stallions and Popov pinches a goal against the run of play. WINNERS.

And here are the goals we scored.

40 goal involvements for Purk, the natural successor to Baggio (who did pretty well himself).

The two centre halves were outstanding all season.

I’m happy to take the plaudits.

Nothing for the players of course.

And in sad news, the Micker has called it.

With everything won, I think that’ll be it for this save. I could go and win the European SUper Cup and World Club Cup but we’ve done it all a million times. So, what now?

  1. If you’re looking for an idea for a new save, here’s one I thought of.
You are only allowed one player of each unique position (apart from keepers). So only one DC, one DR, one DL, one DRC, one DLC, one D/MC etc etc. Maybe start with a promoted non league side, so you’ve got a blank squad to work with.
