Bom Dia! It’s Friday again, and that can only mean that Nick is back to resume his Portuguese adventure with Wolves, who have just finished 4th in their first season in the Premiership. Will European football help attract any big names to Molineux over the summer?…
I’ll start with an apology… some of you may have noticed that last week, I said I was taking a break from this adventure to bring you something special this week. Unfortunately, that something special isn’t quite ready yet, but good things come to those who wait…
So back to Molineux we go, and we start with an outgoing as Soares heads to Spain. He only played 3 games this season, but was a bit of a stopgap anyway…
I then get call from Jorgey boy, who tells me he’s landed me my biggest name yet in João Pinto for £1.6m from Benfica! He’s almost 30, but hopefully there’s plenty of life left in him…
Next to leave is Cavaco, who struggled to get in the team with so many other wingers. I get back what I paid for him, so nothing lost…
We then get our first ground capacity increase, which doesn’t hurt the budget too much…
I snap up this regen on a free. He seems to have the right attributes for a centre half, so we’ll see…
Here’s Trev with this week’s random transfer…
As one centre back joins, another is offloaded, as one of my three Miguels joins Scunny…
And to save some time, here are all five of the summer loan-outs in one go…
All of that leaves the squad looking like this on the eve of season 5. It could still do with a trim in some areas, but I’m happy enough for now…
And here’s how we line up for our first match..
We hit the ground running at Wimbledon. I get all excited and think João Pinto has scored on his debut, only to find out that it was Luís Pinto. That’s not going to get confusing much…
However, João doesn’t have to wait too long for his first goal, but it’s not enough to stop Everton, who are seemingly back to their frustrating best, even with ten men…
The new man is wasting little time in making himself a Molineux hero, as he grabs a quick fire brace to turn things around against Sunderland and get us back to winning ways…
We look to be heading for yet another win over United, only for Torrão to give away a penalty and get sent off in the last minute to gift Fergie’s men a point…
Theo Zagorakis takes pity on us at Leicester after Stephen Glass has seemingly shattered our hopes of a point, but my hatred of Pierre Van Hooijdonk is well and truly resurrected…
Leeds’ marquee summer signing is Batigol for £750k, but can he do it on a wet Wednesday in Wolverhampton? The answer is yes, but thankfully his goal is too little too late…
We’re handed a favourable draw to kick off our debut European campaign…
After a dire first half at 2nd-placed Villa, J.P. gets us back in it, but then our keeper fumbles to the feet of Dwight Yorke to hand them the hosts the derby spoils…
Our flight is cancelled, so we take the midnight train to Georgia, and the boys show no signs of tiredness as we stroll to a 5-0 first leg win, which is hopefully enough to see us through…
It’s an explosive start at home to Spurs, with J.P. at the double to get us going. The game settles down for almost an hour, after which our other Pinto finishes things off…
Amaral was the last one listed for loan, and he heads to Spain for some game time…
There’s little to separate us from Sheffield Wednesday, other than a lucky 13th minute penalty which J.P. calmly tucks away to steel all three points for us…
Alexandre gets us off to the perfect start in the second leg with Dinamo Tblisi, but me making wholesale changes to the side eventually takes its toll and we lose 3-1. It’s not too much of a problem though, thanks to that first leg win…
Our cup love affair with Leeds continues…
Chelsea are a team we’ve become used to beating easily, but unfortunately for us, they signed Mickael Landreau over the summer, which is enough said really…
The next leg of our European tour will be back home in Britain…
We take our frustration out on Liverpool, as J.P. continues his fine form. Leonardsen pegs us back, before Capucho and the other Pinto make it three, and we can even afford to miss a penalty in a rare famous win at Anfield…
I expect a tough trip to Ibrox, but am shocked at how easily we brush The mighty Gers aside. Apparently it’s a shock defeat for them, but you wouldn’t know it from how they played…
We end this week with more northern opposition. Newcastle are 19th in the table and winless in three games – exactly the type of opposition that we’ve been prone to losing to, and my fears are realised by Gilles De Bilde…
Despite that loss, we’re sitting pretty in 4th a third of the way into the season. There’s a bit of a gap between ourselves and Everton in 3rd, but still a long way to go yet…
I think that’s as good a place as any to leave it for another week. I hope you all have a great Christmas, and that you’ll join us again next week, where there’ll be plenty of cup action as we face Leeds in the League Cup and continue our maiden European voyage as well as kicking off our FA Cup campaign. We’ll also face a few old friends in the league. Feliz Navidad and Adeus!
