Bom Dia! and welcome to season eight with Nick and his Portuguese pack of Wolves. Their four seasons in the Premiership have been a mixed bag so far, but will this be the season where they finally find some badly-needed consistency? Over to Nick…
Before we begin, here’s a reminder of how the squad is looking. José Dominguez was the marquee summer signing for a whopping £62k, Mario Raul came in from Barcelona, and Zezinho, Eduardo, Mozer, Secretario and Hugo are all regens who cost nothing…
After starting last season strongly, JP dropped right off the pace towards the end, so I’ve decided to start with Dani Pauleta up front with Coelho, in an otherwise unchanged lineup. As a wise man once said, let’s football…
We’ve not got too far to travel for our first match, and it’s a great start to the season as Pauleta repays my faith with a brace against Villa as we start this campaign with a win…
United are next, and it’s level at half time. The Boa restores our lead from the spot before we surrender our man advantage, but despite me growing nervous of an equaliser, Coelho seals an unexpected win 4 minutes from time…
This season’s League Cup run will start at home to second division Crewe Alexandra…
As usual, just when things are going well, we get a bad injury. Fan-f*cking-tastic…
Rui Jorge seems to be a dead rubber, and one I’m keen to offload, so I bring in this lad for free in preparation for the sale…
Loja replaces Pauleta at Bolton, where we lead through an unlikely source, but an equaliser comes on the stroke of half time. The second half is frankly ridiculous, as a super keeper performance sees all 6 of our shots on target saved as we leave frustrated with a point…
We take a while to get going against Fulham, but finally take the lead after twice being clean through, and daylight finally arrives on the hour. There’s another super keeper display, but this time it’s not enough to deny us a win.
Ramirez becomes the next loan ranger, joining Camacha in the Portuguese second division…
Anfield next, and Michael Duberry takes pity on us and hands us the lead. Liverpool start to get going in the second half, and McAteer bundles the ball over the line to snatch the hosts a point with ten minutes remaining…
Half our back line is missing against Sheffield Wednesday, with Xavier injured and Torrão suspended, so Zezinho and Folha start, and basically we go behind, then go in front, go behind again, and then lose…
It doesn’t take long for a bid to come in for Rui Jorge, and The Albion take him off my hands…
We go behind early at Sunderland, and then things get a whole lot worse half an hour later, as Anselmo stupidly gets himself sent off and they double their lead from the resulting free kick. Stadium of Shite more like…
After two losses on the spin, the League Cup game comes at just the right time. The Coelho-Loja partnership isn’t quite bearing enough fruit for my liking, so I give Amaral a game up top and it pays serious dividends…
Back to the league we go, and in some style too, with Amaral getting another brace as we absolutely destroy Coventry and say a big f*ck you to Magnus Hedman in the process…
Our newbie joins Atletico Madrid B on loan…
I have clearly been wasting Amaral by putting him out on the wing all this time, and for the third game running, he scores to get us underway down by The Riverside before The Boa gets what turns out to be the winner…
Torrão is fast becoming a liability, and notches up his 3rd red card in 10 games in the League Cup at Crewe. Luckily the hosts only have 10 minutes with a man advantage, and a solitary Eduardo strike is enough to see us through…
To face Walsall next…
A bit of luck was something we were seriously lacking last season, but it’s with us against Barnsley, as some Herbert finds his own net to gift us three points, which I’ll certainly take…
Again, what’s the problem? Man up FFS…
Well this is just incredible…
We’re out of sight against Wimbledon in under half an hour, and for once, Carl Cort and Marcus Gayle are thankfully nowhere to be seen as the umpire calls game, set and match…
Amaral loves an early goal, and gives us the lead inside 5 minutes for the 4th time since being moved up front. Newcastle fight back until their keeper gets sent off, and The Boa keeps his cool from the spot to give us the win.
The last action this week is the League Cup tie with Walsall. I’m tempted to make changes but don’t want to disrupt the rhythm we seem to have at the minute, so I stick with the same side and we cruise through in some style…
There are a few sides I’ve come to despise in this blog, and Sheffield United are certainly one of them, so hopefully we can give The Blades a good blunting in the next round…
Mozer heads back home on loan to Beira Mar, who will hopefully turn him into a baller…
Before I go, here’s the table. Putting Amaral up front seems to be paying off big time. But I’m not getting too carried away yet, because we saw last season just how inconsistent we can be at times, and can quite easily go on a losing run at the flick of a switch, so let’s just enjoy this moment until next week at least…
That’s all for this week. Thanks as always for coming along, and do come back next time to see if we can keep this good form up with games against Leeds, Colchester, Everton, Sheffield United, Arsenal, Leicester and Huddersfield to take us up to halfway. Have a great weekend, Adeus!
