Ah…Tony Thorpe. That guy that gets snapped up in the first few months of the game by a Premier League side without fail…and nobody knows why. At the beginning of CM9798 Tony was at the start of what would also be in real life, a short-lived spell at Fulham, having signed in the summer of 1997 after a prolific spell at Luton.
After 13 games, in 1998 Tony signed for Bristol City who loaned him back out to Reading, and Luton (twice) also all in 1998. After becoming fairly prolific at Bristol, he signed for…wait for it…Luton again in 2002 before leaving again in acrimonious circumstances. He went on to have an unspectacular nomadic career continuing the trend of playing for more than one club a year.

The Luton Laudrup!
Saw him play upfront for Bristol City alongside another CM enigma, Søren Anderson (who always used to end up at Barcelona) against Wolves in 1998. Wolves won 6-1. I think Tony Thorpe was subbed off for Colin Cramb as well after a pretty dismal performance.
