The Wonderkids – Part 9: Record Breakers

We’re back again for the next instalment of the Wonderkids we’ve taken a group of misfits from all over the globe with unlimited potential from Division Three to Division One, but can they go any further? We don’t know how many of the 655 have loaded into this save, but we need to top up our shortlist, so we’ll keep uncovering them. You can catch up right from the start here.

Last time out we’d just won promotion to Division One and finally made our peace with the Football League Trophy. During the close season, we’ve moved Ballack to the B Team and made one smart addition to the front line:

We’ve ear-marked the ‘keeper that we want, but he isn’t available just yet:

Our season will kick-off at Barnsley who still have two minus men on the books, a pair of Bullocks! Meanwhile our League Cup draw is kind as we’ll start with 3rd Division Shrewsbury. The Cups will get second string attention as the board has ruthlessly restricted the players we can put up for loan to Arild Sundgot, Alex Martin, Jered Stirling and Rick Gillies. Given we are blessed in attack, it is going to be challenging to keep everyone happy. It may spell the end for the drummer boy.

The season opener is upon us, and we almost get champ-maned but…three cheers for Ramirez! Oh that never gets old while he’s carrying us!

We follow up with an arduous League Cup fixture against Shrewsbury and we struggle to a 1-0. Next up its Bradford. Somebody gets ‘parried’ away and we keep ‘degn’ a bigger hole. Luckily playing with 9 men for half the game doesn’t faze us.

Bloody Cambridge laying down the marker season after season.

Old paper gloves is back and another glass soldier hits the treatment room.

And whilst I’d love to use this to give game time, we get a bum deal as we draw a Premier League side. Sent to Coventry indeed.

Un-schaafted!

Cock-legged David Kelly spoils our run as we concede our first league goal.

The strike force goes missing at the home of the personal computer. It’s getting tougher.

One stand-out is Bing. He continues to defy his ratings with solid and consistent performances.

Did somebody order tea for two? Udom Thai’s himself in knots as he goes from hero to villain inside 90 minutes.

We break a record. Its notable, as we’re finally breaking even each month. The same cannot be said of the B-Team.

We almost fall to our first defeat at Wolves but for a late Ramirez strike. The usual mix of walking wounded and U21 call-ups is killing us.

It’s that man again, carrying us onwards. Can’t find anyone who can take penalties yet.

We follow up by destroying a team led by our old friend Elijah Litana and it’s great to be scoring goals again. Bak-man incoming!

Proud moment as Duarte earns his first cap coming on to replace Figo.

Parry gets a pointless injury as Wales crash out of qualifying with a 1-0 defeat to Spain.

Things are going well, even a minus man fails to spoil our day.

The gap to 17th in the Premier League feels like an ocean.

This game is toying with me. Are my training methods too Steve Bruce?

September is going well. It all seems fairly comfortable as we brush aside Preston.

However, we’ve only played Barnsley in terms of top 6 sides so far. We’ve mainly played teams dipping in and out of the bottom 6. The challenge to sustain our position becomes apparent when we face Rory Delap minus-man led Carlisle.

We were lucky to come away with a point after facing the brunt of an onslaught. That said, I’m happy with how the league position has gone. Drummer boy hasn’t featured, and I’ve binned him off to the B Team to hopefully get some game time. His stats aren’t improving, and he’s given nothing in his two appearances.

We’re going well, although Ramirez and Inzaghi are carrying our goal threat. Goals conceded isn’t too bad. Here’s to hoping the injuries and suspensions don’t ruin us. The loan lads are picking up game time, but I might have to think about foisting them onto the B team as our progress outstrips their own. Thanks for staying with us, see you next time!
