Hallo! RB Leipzig have battled their way to the top of the Bundesliga, but with just under half a season still to go, and 1860 Munich and Dortmund breathing down their necks with games in hand, can Nick and his men hold their nerve?
We’ve been here before and thrown it away, so I’ve learned not to get too excited. I wouldn’t change it though.
I spend the winter break rejecting offers and telling my own players that they can’t leave, but one who I do let go is the Thaiphoon, who joins Nürnberg after 125 goals in 209 games.
I’ve come this far with only two keepers, but I bring in another just in case the unthinkable happens. You just never know on this game.
Coincidentally, the action begins against the Thaiphoon and his new club. We deservedly lead on 25 minutes, Clausen doubles our lead on half time, and The Iceman makes it three goals and three points.
Dortmund beat 1860 midweek, and they’re both now a point behind us, and we play them back-to-back very soon.
The early signs aren’t good against Hamburg, and they deservedly lead after Libbra tips the scales in their favour. The second half is better but we can’t score, and typically Dortmund lose and 1860 draw just to rub some salt in.
1860 won their remaining game in hand to go three points clear of us, and we play out a 1-1 draw with them, missing our chance to go level. Dortmund also blow their opportunity to go top of the table after a draw with Schalke.
Speaking of Dortmund… Revault has a blinder as per, but the iceman, who’s gone missing lately, puts us ahead. The equaliser comes, but Revault fumbles a late shot to hand us the win. It doesn’t stop the prick getting his ninth man of the match award of the season though.
Vilhjalmsson makes it two in two to give us the lead against Leverkusen in the cup, but they scramble in a late equaliser and then win on penalties. Oh well, at least we can put all our efforts into the league now.
We lead early in Dresden, but can’t add to it before half time. The second half is livelier, and it goes 3-2 as Neira nets against us again, but two late goals seal it. 1860 win again, but Dortmund lose to fall seven points behind.
We’re on the front foot from the off against BMG, and it’s 4-0 at half time but could have easily been double that. We manage one more in the second half, and it’s an emphatic win, which puts us top after Bayern beat 1860!
Stuttgart give us a scare, and we have to wait 70 minutes before a quick-fire Clausen brace, but they could have been two or three up by that point were it not for our keeper. 1860 draw again with Freiburg and we’re two clear!
The world’s best gives Schalke the lead before Leonidas equalises, and then completes his hat trick to put us 3-1 up. There’s time for them to get a second and make it a nervy last fifteen, but we see it out and 1860 draw again to put us four clear!
Chemnitz offer nothing going forward, but make us wait until almost half time to take the lead. It’s a similar story in the second half, but the iceman settles the nerves eight minutes from time. 1860 notch up their third goalless draw in a row and we’re now six points clear!
Cottbus catch us napping and take an early lead, and we’re lucky it’s not 2-0 just before Leonidas levels. They miss the chance to regain the lead from the spot, and the iceman makes them pay. They should have equalised right at the death but it’s our lucky day.
Penksa wastes little time in scoring on his return against Bochum, but it’s them who lead after the break. A rare Carrete goal regains us the lead, and an inspired sub sees Arzeno assist Vilhjalmsson for a priceless winner.
Form seems to count for nothing against Bayern, and we’re 2-0 down at half time in the Olympiastadion. A goal each in the second half makes it 3-1, and it’s our first loss in ten games, as 1860 win to halve our lead to three points.
We’re back on track with a straightforward win against Freiburg, as our Scandinavian triangle does the business, and Hamburg are now my favourite team after they equalise in the 91st minute against 1860 Munich to nick a point and hand us the league title with a game to spare. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
With the title in the bag, the Bielefeld game is totally irrelevant, and looks to be heading for a draw, but Big Dunc has other ideas as he rises in the last minute and heads in the winner to ensure we sign off as champions with a win.
I’m expecting at least double the £2.6m I’ve been used to receiving for finishing third, but apparently winning the league is only worth an extra £200k…
So there we go, it’s taken seven seasons, but we’re Bundesliga champions at last! Here’s the final table. We won the title by five points in the end, with goals for and against columns typical of the trusty 2-3-1-2-2 formation. It’s nice to see Bochum so far down the table, but sadly they’ve avoided relegation.
The league-winning player stats for you.
I was pretty much set on ending this blog here, so I didn’t have to sell any prize assets, but this team have given me everything for seven seasons, so the least I can do is give them one fully-deserved season of champions league football, so I’ll see you next week for the start of the eighth and final season. Tschüss!
