Happy Monday. Another week is it? Here’s Zak to get it off to a flying start
Welcome back to Season Seven, Champers.
Last time out our Plymouth Argyle heroes won promotion to Division two via automatic promotion. It means we’re done with the lower division challenges, and next on our hit list of Neil Warnock achievements is promotion to the Premier League.

The end-of-season retirements as the 2003 season draws to a close throws up a couple of options in Division One, as QPR and relegated Ipswich search for a new leader. My ex-clubs Kidderminster and Forest are now Premier League clubs with a core of players I brought in. Why not do the same with Argyle? I decide to stick to my guns and give Argyle another season! It means another Division 2 campaign – but a chance to build a squad capable of transition to the Premiership. Lets see how George Ndah and David Hopkin get on once again – dragging along the regens of Teddy Sheringham, Gazza, and Tim Sherwood.
In the close season I’m busy recruiting and filling up the squad.
Goalkeeper Zelec is released, to give yongsters Hughes and Coleman a chance. You can find regens of David Batty [Revenscroft], Tony Adams [Valentine], Chris Coleman [Parrish], and ex-Argyle Striker Sean McCarthy [Goss], now buried in the squad, all available for loan. I also bring in Jason Wilkins from former club Kidderminster [you may remember he’s the regen of Brian McClair], and recommended regens David Baddeley with wonderfully named Byron Fry and Bruce Gascoigne. Can’t say who they were in a previous guise, but have good stats and if League Scout 2 has an ‘H’ for recommendation, then I listen!
Final signing is a real gem. Ex-World Player of the Year George Weah is added to the squad through regen Jonathan Nagabe. I’ve had Nagabe on my shortlist since Weah retired [both at Cheltenham and Argyle]. Obviously not content with Division three football, he finally agreed to join for a hefty £10k after our promotion!
103 goal contributions in 65 games.. I wonder how long we can keep him?!
I decide to try this @Nikolai formation in the early games to give a chance for our young DMCs to impress. Unfortunately Nagbe gets injured in pre-season and is out for a month. It means Ndah will be joined by Pates up front (Nicky Forster), with Gooden (Sheringham) in AMC role.
Young Welsh stopper, Hughes, gets a rude awakening to life in the first team. What a season opener! After going 3-0 down after only 16 minutes I bring on youngster Steve Goss, hauling off Hughes and going keeperless. It kind of works.. Getting back to 4-4 at halfitme!! It all calms down a bit in the second half, but we go on to concede two more and lose 6-5. OOF>
It’s a little more settled in the league cup against Division 1 side, Ipswich. George Ndah continues his season-ending form with another brace. If you’re counting, thats nice goals in his last four games. Who needs George Weah junior?
You can get to FCUK! The injured Nagabe will not be allowed to move to Palace before kicking a ball for Argyle.
Ndah make it six in three (eleven in five) as Swansea are put to the sword.
At Portman Road a spirted draw means we enter the second round of the League Cup.
We score five more at West Brom, not before The Baggies come back to level up 4-4 and make it a nervy finish.
We’re scoring freely, but conceding far too many. I ask the world scout to find a goalkeeper. Cameroon goalkeeper Victor Mfede may fit the bill. I believe it’s the regen of ex-Deportivo goalkeeper Jacques Songo’o.
The long awaited debut for Jonathan Nagbe brings a goal and a 4-0 win over Preston North End. Ndah will get the headlines, but is good to get a clean sheet.
Goalkeeper Victor Mfede makes his debut at home to Southampton. He concedes four – though we win the game 5-4 thanks to Nagbe scoring FOUR! Mfede also manages a ‘9’ for his effort. Can that be seen as solid?
I’m still condeding too many. Sorry @Nikolai, it’s time to change the formation back to a boring narrow 4-2-2-2.
The new formation leads to a clean sheet and win at local rivals Torquay. Ndah and Nagbe on the scoresheet again.
The Torquay game is followed by five more goals at Charlton, and a 5-2 win. Braces for Ndah and Nagbe. We are flying!
Ndah scores two more at Brighton, as does David Hopkin. Ndah is a man possessed this season. He wants to get that third promotion and prove Forest wrong for letting him go.
We add another familiar face, and ex-Forest player to the squad.
Pallister had a one-game two-goal cameo last season, but has not been afforded game time at Forest.
The fans affectionately name our two strikers the N’vicibles. A goal apiece puts Premier League team Derby to the sword at Home Park. [Nagabe’s value, incidentally, has rocketed beyond £10 million – thank goodness Palace were not deemed a ‘big club’!]
Four more goals against Scarborough sees our run since opening day defeat to Blackpool continue. Pallister gets his first for the club, as does Wilkins. Nagbe nets two more.
The game brings up our tenth of the league campaign – and where I leave you for this episode. Nine straight wins since the opening day mean we are top by three points from Reading. The ‘goals against’ column does not make for nice reading. Hopefully the arrival of Mfede will sort that!
Will be back next week for another bumper-edition. Until next time.
