A new week brings the post weekend blues for many. But here with your Monday green is Zak and his Plymouth side…though he may have loaned a few out.
Hello Champers!
The lads are in control in Division 2 (ten points clear after 26 games) and currently still in every cup competition. Can David Hopkin and George Ndah inspire the regens of George Weah, Teddy Sheringham, and Brian McClair… let’s see!
This is how the squad looks. I may rue the decision to send so many out on loan, though I can always recall them if needed.

I bring in some defensive cover in the form of Owen ‘Razor’ Wilding. You may remember he was at back for my Cheltenham side before being poached by Villa. As is the tradition – he didn’t get a sniff in the Premier League. Villa’s loss is my gain. Welcome Razor Ruddock junior!
Our first game of the episode brings a 2-2 draw with Swansea. The defensive reinforcement of Wilding was timely after injury to Gradilenko.
I lose young right back David Baddeley to tribunal as Wimbledon hoover him up for £1.1m. I respond by bringing in a versatile fullback with Premier League experience.
A first home game for Wilding and Edghill sees the lads beat West Brom 3-1 in a Boxing Day treat. Teddy Sheringham’s regen, Gooden, makes up for a rare missed penalty by Nagbe.
New Year. Same results. Our FA Cup run continues with a comfortable win against Cambridge as we see in 2004 in style. 16,000 fans see four goals scored once again.
I recall young CB Daniel Valentine for the Windscreen Shield match against Wycombe. (Valentine is the regen of Tony Adams). He’s straight in the side and helps keep a clean sheet against a side in the division below us. Gooden scores his fifth in three games as he enjoys a rare scoring run.
Back in the league, Grimsby are hit for four, and Gooden comes good again. That’s seven in four!
We have reached the quarter final of the League Cup and are given a home tie against Division One side Brantford. What could be a winnable tie is hampered by the fourth minute sending off of defensive midfielder Cambiasso. The lads fight – but are out classed and outnumbered. We lose 2-0. Darn.
George Ndah takes out his frustrations on Southampton. Less that five thousand trundle out of The Dell despondent. It means times are certainly tough for the Saints.
We follow with an efficient win at Deepdale. Two shots on target, two goals. I’ll take it!
After the game we lose Jamie ‘Mick Duxbury’ Warren to Blackburn. It’s not a massive loss, but he was an able, versatile back up.
FA Cup fourth round next. We are drawn against Premier League opposition again – this time Huddersfield. My former left back Danny Hall is on the bench for The Terriers. It’s a defensive masterclass as Amoruso and Jermain Wright are kept at bay. It’s a remarkable 3-0 win just to show the potential of this team.
One cup to another. Windscreen Shield Southern Section semis. It’s tit-for-tat as we lead and are pegged back instantly. We are fortunate to go in 2-1 up at halftime and turn the screw in the second half.
Our league form continues to impress as the lads grind out a 2-0 win against Charlton to bring up our 30th league game of the season.
We are still in control – now eleven points clear of Norwich.
It’s another local derby against relegation-threatened Torquay. Soccer AM’s Hellen Chamberlain will want to forget this fixture very quickly. Five-nil and cruising in front of 16,000 home fans. On a Wednesday night. Remarkable.
Five thousand less fans on the following Saturday watch Nagbe score a second successive hattrick.
The FA Cup train continues – this time a fifth round tie against Premier League Derby. I see two former Nottingham Forest players in the line-up with Middlemass and Marquis. (Why is Rio Ferdinand on the bench?!) We one again need resolute defending as youngsters Valentine and Wilding shine. Ndah and Wilkins get the goals as the story goes on!
No cup hangovers against Scarborough as Valentine scores his first goal for the club. Nagbe hits another on the stroke of halftime to make it comfortable.
Scunthorpe have no answer four days later as a Brown see’s red and the lads secure a well-earned 3-0 win.
I add to the squad after the game with no less than three signings…
Danny Hall is a familiar name from Kidderminster days and joins to provide cover at left back. Regis Warnock (great name) is the regen of Craig Short. He may not pull up trees but will again provide cover. Finally French forward Corentin Martins joins from the Man Utd transfer list. He;s 34, but still has plenty to offer. This could be a coup for the club and help us see out the season positively.
Here’s the full squad;
The new signings threaten to derail us… though we come from behind courtesy of some Nagbe magic. Two late goals show me the lads are up for the fight! Get in!
The Windscreen South Section Final see’s First vs Second in Division Two face-off… Norwich are no match for us as the lads see out a 3-1 win in what is the first leg of the tie. Is it enough to out the tie to bed?
This is followed by us hosting yet another Premier League side in the FA Cup… George Ndah puts us in front and I think we are there with a narrow 1-0 win… our concentration lapses as Leicester score late to force a replay.
I don’t to get ahead of myself… but look at the sides left in the FA cup draw..
Windscreen shield second leg and we nearly make a mess of it! Its a tight first half as we draw 1-1, giving us an aggerate lead of 4-2. After Nagbe puts us 2-1 up on the night I withdraw three players with an eye on future fixtures. Norwich go on the offensive…. scoring three more goals to put the tie at 4-2 on the night, 5-5 on averaged. We hold on.. just… to secure an away-goals win. Phew!
We draw our old nemesis York. Bring it on!
The final game of the episode sees us battle past Luton courtesy of a late Nagbe goal. The lads are playing through the tiredness and doing brilliantly.
The game brings up our 36th of the season. We find ourselves now 15 points clear of Norwich and with ten games to play, It’s only a matter of time before we are promoted.
Join us next time as we play through the end of the season, FA Cup Quarter final replay and Windscreen Shield Final. Phew.
