CM9798 on iPhone – It’s back!

Greetings, I am very happy to bring you the news many of you have been waiting for: CM9798 is once again available on iPad and iPhone!

You might remember in 2021 the community found iDos could run CM9798 on your Apple devices, but the app was withdrawn shortly afterwards. I assume this was a coincidence.

This left the community in a state of limbo, if you managed to download iDos 2 before its demise then you can still use it to this day. It did cost though, and if you weren’t quick then you missed out. Until now.

Thanks to the brilliant PES_DNA (Shales to many from the CM Cup) for the information, we can now enjoy CM9798 (and many other games) using an app called Retroarch

Here’s my usual no fuss guide to getting this working. As ever, this is what worked for me, there’s likely easier ways. This is for iPhone, I couldn’t get it to work on my iPad but the instructions would be the same. I assume this is possible for Android but I have no idea, our previous guide for that is available here

Step 1 – Download the Retroarch app

Go to the app store and search it. This is very easy

Mine says open as I’ve already downloaded it but you get the idea. Open it but do nothing- this is just to complete setup.

Step 2 – Download CM9798 to the Apple device

This should be relatively easy too. You can download the game HERE or from our How To Install page, just follow the guide. Once it has downloaded, go to Files on your device (an app, you’ll find it amongst your other apps) and go to wherever you downloaded the game to. For me, this was in the downloads section where it should be by default but where it currently is doesn’t matter. Don’t be put off that the download is called cm9798v2, it is the normal version of the game from January 1998.

Step 3 – Move the CM9798 download to the Retro Arch folder

I’m not sure how necessary this is but it worked for me.

It’s a zip file so just tap on it and hold down until a little menu comes up. Go to Move (or copy)

You want to move it to Retroarch Downloads, which you will find in the “On my iphone” section of the files menu

Then choose Retroarch, then the Retroarch folder then Downloads. It’s a zip folder so just double tap on it to unzip it, it will appear as a folder immediately after you double tap it.

There you can see my CM9798 folder. Ignore the CM2e16.exe that is loose, you won’t have that and it doesn’t work, I was just experimenting.

Step 4 – Launch from Retroarch

It’s finally time to open the app we downloaded in Step 1. It will open a menu 99% of which I don’t understand

Tap Load Core

Choose Dosbox (Dosbox – Pure)

Tap load content

Pick Downloads

Tap the CM9798 folder (NOT the zip)

Tap CM2e16.exe (or e8 if you only want one league etc)

Choose Current Core

You should get the usual screen

From here, you are on your own. I am told you can adjust settings to speed it up but that is beyond my skill set.

Enjoy, remember to tweet @cm9798 to show us you’ve got it working and tag @pes_DNA to thank him for sharing the knowledge!

  1. theeternalsigh – Thoughts and musings from a grumpy music and film snob. Will contain bad language and outlandish conclusions based on scant evidence. Enjoy

just tried this and it worked….hazzah!!!

  2. So the game loads up, but as soon as i’m in the options screen i can’t move the cursor, and i don’t have the ‘pad’ like buttons you’ve got in the screen shot?
I’ve tried moving with two fingers, but nothing 🙁

    Any suggestions please?
