Bom Dia! and welcome to the finale of Nick’s first season in the Premiership with his entirely-Portuguese Wolves squad. They’re in a great position, but have some tough games coming up. Can they hold it together until the end? Here’s Nick…
Whatever happens over the next 15 games, I’m proud of the boys. I’d have bitten your hand off if you’d offered me relegation survival, but we now find ourselves in contention for European football, so let’s see what we can do.
United are up first, and they finally get their revenge on us for beating them twice in a row, as we succumb to their deadly attacking trio of Alfonso, Chiesa and Wes Brown…
Chelsea are another team who must be sick of the sight of us, but once again we give them the blues courtesy of a tidy Pauleta finish…
A quick FA Cup break, and we’re chopping through Forest with ease up until 70 minutes, when we decide to let in 2 goals in 4 minutes just to make it interesting, but we do just enough to go through to face Wimbledon…
I’ve not bought anyone in a while, and this kid looks promising, so I snap him up for £400k before anyone else gets in there…
Pinto shows us what we’ve been missing with a brace on his return from injury in the most Spursy game at White Hart Lane, where once again we do all the hard work, only to almost let it all slip right at the end…
And if Pinto’s last match was impressive, then how’s this? A hat trick and a 10/10 man of the match performance as we chew up and spit out The Toffees…
We go behind at home to Sheffield United, but Coelho drags us back into it just after half time before our man of the hour slices The Blades open to complete the turnaround with 8 minutes remaining. What a hero that man is…
The FA Cup trip to Wimbledon rolls around, and we’re Cort off-guard early and never recover, as Gayle storms his way through our defence. Pinto tries his best, but this time it’s not enough, and we’re out for another year…
Newcastle are the first of three away games in a row. It looks to be heading for a 1-1 draw after a penalty a piece, until Paul Lambert rises from a late corner to head home and make himself the local hero…
I somehow knew Dave Watson would have a worldie against us for Barnsley, and sure enough, he’s man of the match after saving everything we throw at him while Cureton and Tinkler fill their boots at the other end…
For someone with an injury proneness stat of 1, Manarte sure does get injured a lot…
Oh Mickey, what a pity…
Highfield Road really is a place I’ve come to despise, and it’s another fruitless outing as The Sky Blues condemn us to a 4th defeat in a row, which sees us slide down to 6th in the table…
In the absence of Manarte and Bruno, I’m forced to play Sa Pinto up front against Leeds, but the gamble pays dividends. Harry Kewell levels, but The Boa earns us a much-needed win 12 minutes from time…
Sa Pinto enjoys himself again up front against table-topping Villa. It should have been more than 1-0, but man of the match Bosnich was obviously keen to make up for his red card last time we met, but it’s 3 points nonetheless!
Each of those points cost our best defender a month out injured. If there was a league table for injuries, we’d be running away with it!
The winning run lasts just two games, and despite battling back from 2-0 down at City, we immediately hand the lead straight back to them, as Keith O’Neill foils us once again…
Despite the best efforts of a predictably-inspired Neil Sullivan, Coelho ensures we bounce straight back, as he nets the only goal of the game to avenge the FA Cup hammering against Wimbledon…
We contain Liverpool in the first half to go in for our oranges on level terms, but then undo all our hard work in the second half by rolling over and letting them run riot. Great stuff…
Our penultimate game is Arsenal, who have now climbed a few places to 13th. I’d almost forgotten about Pauleta, but he reminds me that he’s still here with a hat trick to shoot down The Gunners and get us back on track…
As things stand, we’re in 4th place going into our last game. A win will keep us there, but a draw or loss means we’re relying on other results to determine where we finish. The lowest we can finish is 7th, so come what may, it’s been a good first season in the top flight.
To Hillsborough we go. It’s an end-to-end first half, and we take our chances, as Pauleta and The Boa give us a healthy 2-0 lead. Wednesday fight back in the second half and go close a few times, but Pauleta gets his second to secure us 4th place and UEFA Cup football next season!
The good news continues as we’re awarded £9.25m for our efforts, which takes the bank balance over the £30m mark…
So here’s confirmation. I didn’t really know what to expect from our first season in the top flight, especially after it took three attempts to get here, but I’m so proud of the boys, who surpassed my expectations of them, and reached a big milestone ahead of schedule…
That’s it for this week. We’ll be taking a break next week as I have something rather special to bring you, so be sure to look out for that!
We’ll resume in two weeks’ time, when I’ll be looking to see if securing European football has done anything to help our appeal to the top Portuguese players over the summer.
In the meantime, I hope you all have a great Christmas. Feliz Navidad and Adeus!
