Bom Dia! and welcome back to Molineux as we check in with Nick to see how he and his Portuguese-only Wolves squad are getting on. A change in formation has seen them start season six impressively, but they’ve always struggled with consistency, so can they keep it up? Here’s Nick with the latest…
After twelve games were 4th, which isn’t to be sniffed at. Liverpool lead the way just as in real life, but 5 points isn’t an insurmountable gap, so let’s see what we can do to catch them.
We start with a departure, as a frustrated Delfim heads home on loan in search of some regular minutes…
What better way to start the match action than a midlands derby? We’re quickly behind, and Scholes carries on haunting me for mocking his Coventry move. We battle back, but Juan more goal from Villa sees them leapfrog us…
There’s nothing much to say about the visit of Barnsley, other than that we’re absolute shite from the first whistle to the last. They’re 9th, so they have improved, but the board are still quick to remind me that it’s a very poor result.
I continue to offload centre backs, and this time it’s Rui Miguel, who joins Leicester…
We literally do everything but score at 2nd-placed Sunderland. 16 shots at goal and we can’t put 1 away. Their man of the match keeper looks very much like Neville Southall’s regen, which may explain a few things…
When I find myself in times of trouble, Jorgey Mendes comes to me, speaking words of wisdom to sign this lad, who’s been tearing it up in the Portuguese 2nd Division…
After those last three games, this means more to me than you know…
The losses keep coming though, and this time it’s Newcastle. Gary Speed lives up to his name and gives them a first minute lead, which our original Pauleta nullifies, but that’s as good as it gets, as two more Toon goals seal our fate…
A day out in the Forest awaits us in the FA Cup.
Cup games always seem to come at the right time for us, and hopefully a narrow win over Wycombe thanks to Coelho’s first goal in ages might raise confidence levels a bit. But it’s not all good news, as we draw Man Utd next…
It seems that cup win has indeed worked its magic, as we get a first win in five games down by The Riverside. We’re largely helped by an early Boro red card, but after how things have been going lately, I couldn’t give a toss…
We follow that up with a laboured victory over Stoke, half of which we play with ten men as Anselmo’s dismissed. Picão gives us a late lead, and then there’s some even later drama, with two 92nd minute goals, but it’s another win…
Our game against Wimbledon is all about JP, as he smashes in 5 goals, equalling Andy Cole’s haul against Ipswich back in ‘95, to well and truly put the Fear into the Crazy Gang…
We must be doing well if we can beat Everton. It’s not without a struggle though, as we give away two early penalties in a minute, but luckily they miss one, and Anselmo atones for conceding one of them by scoring the winner…
After his heroics against The Toffees, Anselmo is suspended against Sheffield Wednesday, and his replacement, Nuno Afonso lasts just over 20 minutes. Thankfully this doesn’t disrupt us too much, and a Picão brace seals the deal…
The first of a cup doubleheader is a walk in the Forest, where again we’re aided by a red card, but at that point we’re 2-0 up and it gets better from there. The hosts are Keane to make a game of it, but we ease through to face Bolton.
We’re not so fortunate in the League Cup quarter final with United however. We do manage to take them to extra time, but with ten men it’s tough, and they eventually assert their dominance to put the contest to bed…
We come from behind twice against Leeds to force what’s probably a fair draw, but bringing on both Pauletas proves an inspired change, and Daniel gets the winner with the last kick. African Leeds players, who’d have thought it…
We have to come from behind again at 2nd-from-bottom Fulham, as Amaral gets his third goal in two games, and Freitas (Oceano’s regen) wins it with his first goal in a Wolves shirt. Are things finally beginning to click?…
The vultures are starting to circle for Picão, so it’s just as well I’ve just tied him down to a new long-term contract…
The Boa is out for a month. I suspect the broken ribs are a result of trying to digest a deer after dislocating his jaw to force it down.
FA Cup time. I could’ve put money on Manarte scoring against us, and sure enough he levels after original Pauleta’s opener. But Pedro isn’t finished, and he gets a late second to send us through to face Pompey or Peterborough…
A flurry of Spanish bids come in on their deadline day. I’m not selling, but we don’t exactly need money with £42m in the bank. It’s just a shame that no one wants to join us…
One sale I do decide to make though, is Ramirez, who has been disappointing to say the least. He heads to Italy for a tidy sum…
So after all of that, we’ve climbed a place up to 3rd! Liverpool’s lead is now 10 points, and although the optimist in me says they can still be caught, the realist in me says that runners-up might now be a more realistic ambition…
So that’s all folks for another week. Thanks as always for joining me. Be sure to tune in next week for the business end of the season, with games against 7 of the other 9 teams in the top 10 to come, as well as the remainder of our FA Cup run. See you next week, Adeus!
