Portuguese Men o’ Wolves – Part 31: Villa killer | @NTR9798

Bom Dia! and welcome back to Molineux, where a tactical tweak that has seen Nick’s Wolves make a great start to season 9. Can they keep it up? Or does disappointment lie ahead as per? Here’s Nick with the latest…

Here’s the current state of affairs. It seems that getting relegated 3 seasons ago has given Arsenal the chance to rebuild, and they lead the way after 12 games. We’re not far behind though, and are playing well, so hopefully we can keep pace with them. Let’s f*cking go…

Speaking of Arsenal, this week’s action begins at Highbury, and although we keep the table toppers at bay for almost the whole match, we concede 2 late goals, and The Gunners’ lead over us is increased from 2 points to 5…

Moving on… Traditionally, Liverpool is a game I dread, but on this occasion, we absolutely batter them, as my deadly strike duo combine to inflict the damage, with Coelho increasing his personal tally to 14 for the season so far…

Sheffield Wednesday are breathing down our necks, so a result at Hillsborough would be very helpful. But apparently that’s too much to ask, and after scoring 3 against Liverpool, we can’t hit a Cowe’s arse with a banjo today…

Man Utd have filled the void left by Fergie with Gerry Francis, and in a most un United-like way, Gel’s men surrender their early 1-0 lead, and we don’t need asking twice to take full advantage. Becks’ missed pen certainly helped.

As usual, the joy of a famous win is instantly evened out with the pain of losing one of my star men to injury for a lengthy spell. F*ck off.

The FA Cup’s velvet ball bag hands us a short trip for an all-Midlands tie with Birmingham…

And while we’re on the subject of all-Midlands affairs, our League Cup tie away at Villa is the first of a double-header with our city rivals. Bardon my ignorance, but can someone please explain what the f*ck has happened here?!…

We get a Travelodge just up the road from Villa Park to save going home and coming back again, but unfortunately we’ve learned absolutely nothing from the League Cup loss, and 3 days later it’s exactly the same result…

Another one bites the dust… This handsome b*stard’s goals may have dried up, but his assists certainly haven’t. For f*ck sake…

Former Basque Boy (sort of), Bruno Miguel Gomes comes in for the crocked Rui Costa, and gets a nice game to ease him in, as good old Barnsley are on-hand to give us a nice little confidence boost and get us back on track…

And bringing us up to the halfway point is a trip to European champions, Sunderland. Once again I’m expecting a toughie, but my boys surprise me once more, and there’s a goal for Gomes on his 2nd start in a solid away win!

Here’s a quick look at how things stand at the halfway point. The good news is that we’re now only a point behind Arsenal, but the bad news is that Sheffield Wednesday are now top, and we’re 3 points behind them. There’s still plenty of football to be played yet though…

Deciding to start playing Amaral up front last season was an absolute master stroke even if I do say so myself, and his latest goal coupled with a Coelho brace sees off Birmingham in the FA Cup as we march through to take on our old mates Liverpool in the fourth round…

Our game against Coventry has been moved, so we kick off the 2nd half of the season at home to Leeds, who after going behind, get some sort of revenge for our win at Elland Road by holding us to a frustrating draw…

And if that draw wasn’t bad enough, we’re then beaten at Coventry, as Stellone delivers the knockout blow on a Rocky afternoon just across the city. At least it’s a short trip home…

Ok, this really isn’t funny any more. A 3rd straight game without a win, and loss number 6 of the season down by the Riverside sees us slip to 5th in the table. This is what I worried about after we’d made such a good start…

The FA Cup tie with Liverpool arrives just in time to give us some respite from that mini blip, and once again we hammer them, but this time we’re largely helped by them having 2 men sent off, but that’s not our problem…

The draw for the next round offers us a shot at revenge over Coventry in a couple of weeks…

The barren run is finally broken at home to Ipswich, as Gomes continues the good work filling in for Rui Costa in the first minute, and The Boa makes doubly sure at the start of the 2nd half to take us up to 4th in the table…

The chance to get revenge over Coventry isn’t exactly grabbed with both hands, and after Champ legend, Tom Youngs gives The Sky Blues an early lead, Coelho pops up with his 1st goal in 6 games to take it to a replay…

So here’s how we’re looking with 15 games of the season left. I must admit I didn’t look at the table after those 3 games without a win, but to my amazement, the teams around us haven’t exactly capitalised on our misfortune, and it’s now Leicester who lead the way. There’s only a point in it though, so it’s by no means over yet.

So that just about wraps things up for another week, folks. The new formation is still holding its own after a few iffy results, but we’re right in the title mix and still in the FA Cup, so the league and cup double is still very much on!

Join me next week for what’s sure to be a cracking season 9 finale, as we approach the business end, with that aforementioned tough run-in to potentially look forward to if we can just last the distance. See you then. Adeus!
