Bom Dia! and welcome to season eleven with Nick and his Portuguese Wolves, who are now champions of Europe! This season will bring them the opportunity to win the remaining three trophies on the list, but first, Nick has some bad news for us…
After much deliberation, I’ve decided that this will be the last season of this adventure. After finally winning the league and then the Champions League, it feels like the right time to call it a day, plus the inconsistent league form of this team is really driving me nuts!
It’s niggling to have lost two FA Cup finals, but we’ll have one more shot at it, as well as the European Super Cup and World Club Cup to possibly tick off. So for one last time, let’s go…
During the summer update, I’m worried that 34 year-old Figo and 35 year-old Rui Costa will both retire, but I’m delighted that they decide to stay on and finish the adventure with me…
Jorgey was in Spain for the Champions League final, so he meets me in the hotel for breakfast the next morning to discuss transfer plans…
We start by letting Eddy join Recreativo…
And then bring in four youngsters, starting with a keeper for free…
Abel Xavier II is quickly snapped up…
As is João Pinto’s regen. Welcome back, JP…
And after reverting to the 4-3-1-2-2, I now need fullbacks again, and this lad was available and interested for £500k from Alaves…
I finally give Picão his wish and let him leave…
And with Paulo Sousa’s regen on the books, I let Raúl join Valencia to free up some space…
Our first shot at some silverware this season will be in December against Santos in the World Club Cup Final…
And then a month later we’ll face Lyon in the European Charity Shield…
Here’s the customary chunk of loan-outs, which seem largely pointless seeing that this is the last season, but we’re gonna do it anyway…
After all of that, this what I have at my disposal for the final season. I have a couple of targets that I’m still working on, but this is officially the best squad in Europe currently…
First up are Newcastle, and this is how we line up to host The Magpies…
We come out on top in a match that sees no fewer than seven yellow cards to get this final season off to a perfect start…
We then have to come from behind to beat newly-promoted Huddersfield to make it two wins out of two…
Hugo becomes the next loanee, turning from a Wolf into a Lama…
I finally land Dani for £3.1m from Deportivo. I’ve been chasing him since his Ajax days and he’s never been interested, but he finally relents and joins the pack at the age of 30…
Dani boy makes his debut from the bench against Bolton, where we do absolutely everything we can, but just can’t score, and are done in by a super keeper display…
And we follow that up with more Highbury heartbreak as we throw away a 2-0 lead. Guess who was man of the match…
The Champions League groups are drawn, and at first glance ours looks ok, but we’re deep enough into the game to experience the rise of the Scandinavian clubs, so this won’t be easy…
It takes five shots on target to finally make a breakthrough against Colchester, and then the floodgates open as two of the back four provide as many goals…
After a superb start at Fulham and many further wasted shots, we throw away another lead and leave Craven Cottage frustrated…
And then we’re Kreme crackered despite being the better team against Man Utd. You just have to laugh sometimes…
We begin our Champions League defence at home to AGF. Most of their squad is made up of real players, but oddly both their keepers are greys, which works out to our advantage…
Back in the league, we leave it late to get back on track at Goodison, as Futre gets his first goal of the season…
Spanish deadline day arrives, and Barca think that a 32 year-old Sérgio Conceição and £3.85m in cash (bearing in mind we have £110m in the bank) will persuade me to part with the best striker in the country…
In the end I take pity on them and let Mozer join their B team on loan…
It’s looking like a third straight game of one-goal syndrome at home to Villa, who don’t manage a shot on target all match, but we finally rediscover our shooting boots late on…
The first trophy of the season is for me…
We’re quickly behind against Vejle, who give us an almighty scare, and we’re holding on at the end, but just about manage a win…
As we land back in England, we’re greeted by the news that we’ll begin our defence of the League Cup against QPR…
Coventry hammer us four-Knill, some things never change. Magnus Hedman was on the bench so I can’t even blame him this time…
Sunderland have been somewhat problematic during this blog, so hammering them is an unexpected delight, as we manage to Shutt them out and injure Robbie Fowler…
Back in Europe, I finally get chance to blood some of the youngsters, and the second string notch up a routine win over Banik Ostrava, with Chico Silva getting a debut goal…
We end this week down by the Riverside, where we’re back to throwing away leads again as we grind to a stuttering Hoult…
Despite a few iffy results, we’re 2nd after twelve games, and only a point off top spot. It’s pretty tight though, with five teams all within two points of the summit, but there’s lots of football to be played yet…
So our final season is off and running, and we’ve made a decent enough start. Join me next week to see if we can tick another trophy off the list as we take on Santos in the World Club Cup final. See you then. Adeus!
