Portuguese Men o’ Wolves – Part 40: The final (wolf) whistle | @NTR9798

Bom Dia! and welcome to the final episode with Nick and his Portuguese Wolves, who are struggling in the league, but can still win the League Cup and Champions League for a second time. Will they end this story in style? For the last time, here’s Nick…

You wouldn’t believe we started the season brilliantly and were 2nd after 12 games, but things have gone horribly wrong since. Let’s see if we can finish in a respectable position…

Paulo Sousa’s regen was making the anchor position his own after Freitas’ injury, but I’ll have to play a centre back there now…

Next up in the league are Sunderland away. A triple substitution livens us up in the second half, but it’s our keeper who earns us a point…

March deadline day arrives, and my last ever signing is Carlitos for £675k from Benfica. He’s 31, but will do a job for the rest of the season…

I wanted the new boy on the bench for the League Cup final, but forgot it’s 3 subs, so he watches from the stands as The Gunners look to have shot our dreams to pieces, but Vitinha disagrees and wins it 3 minutes later. Hoorah!

Time for a reunion with a certain old lady. Coelho is suspended, which is bad enough, and we get our arses handed to us with an ageing Del Piero running the show. Another away goal from Amaral gives us a glimmer of hope…

We take our anger out on Forest, who get a taste of Carlitos’ way, as he marks his debut by assisting two of our three goals…

And then after a peak comes another trough, as an unchanged side get swept aside by Villa…

We pick ourselves up by indulging in a spot of fox hunting, where Amaral is star marksman, scoring two goals and assisting as many…

It takes 15 shots to finally score against Leeds, and then naturally we surrender our lead and let them score with their first effort. It’ll do…

I go into the 2nd leg with Juve having accepted our fate, but amazingly we find ourselves 3-0 up at half time. I’ve been here so many times over the years and had my dreams shattered by late goals, so I fully expect them to score, but Campos caps one of the most remarkable comebacks I’ve ever witnessed on this game to send us into the final. Jesus f*cking Christ…

Barcelona deny us a fairytale finale against a Portuguese team after they edge out Sporting Lisbon, but I should probably just be grateful to be in the final after that semi with Juve…

After that heroic night in Europe, normal service is resumed in the league at 19th-placed Man City…

A nervous 84 minutes ensues after we take an early lead at Colchester, but we hold on…

And then in our final ever meeting with Liverpool, we send them on their way with a good trouncing. Good riddance, I say…

It would have also been nice to win our last Midlands derby, but there’s no such luck, and we’re frustrated in a St. Andrews stalemate…

You never quite know what you’re going to get from Boro, sometimes they’re shite and others they’re brilliant. Today it’s the latter…

With the Champions League final 11 days away, I field the 2nd string as we sign off with a whimper against Wednesday…

And we finish 8th after another disappointing league season. Bar our title win in 05/06, our 7 other Premiership seasons have resulted in placings of 4th, 11th, 2nd, 7th, 4th, 7th and 8th. For whatever reason, we’ve just never been able to find any consistency in the league…

However, we’ve always seemed to save our best form for the Champions League, and after pulling off the mother of all comebacks against Juventus, we find ourselves in another final…

Rivaldo is the only survivor from the original Barca squad, and they have a total of 9 players injured or cup-tied, which is good news, but the bad news is that Ronaldo isn’t one of them.

It’s the most disastrous of starts as we quickly find ourselves behind, but fend off a barrage of attacks up until half time. Amaral is having a shocker, so he’s off for Dani at half time, and although we improve, we’re still behind on the hour. Time for changes…

Step forward, handsome b*stard himself, Rui Costa, who comes on with a god-like aura of calm around him, threads a pass through for Gomes to run onto, and we’re back in it.

I would have taken extra time and penalties at 1-0 down, but Coelho puts us ahead before Gomes gets his 2nd to send us into dreamland and make it back-to-back European titles!

HOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWLLLLLLLL!!!

God I love seeing this screen…

The AI thinks that their precious Barcelona losing to the defending European champions is a shock. I’m afraid not, mate…

So here’s the full honours list. There remains an FA Cup-shaped hole in the cabinet, but it’s not a bad haul over 11 seasons, especially considering I almost got sacked a couple of times along the way…

But it’s as much about the players as it is me. We signed most top Portuguese internationals (or their regens) over time, but I just wanted to give a few special mentions to some of the key men who are still with us…

Cláudio started as Veiga’s understudy, but went on to make the number one spot his own, and become club captain. Look at those ratings and man of the match awards…

It’s hard for wingbacks to get consistently good ratings in the 2-3-1-2-2, but Campos managed it over 2 seasons, and that’s no mean feat…

Anselmo has been a warrior in central defence. Great average ratings, and popped up with some important goals…

And I can’t not mention his partner, who took a while to force his way into the team, but got there and stayed there in the end…

Torrão has been with me from season one, and is one of my favourite signings. He’s been Mr. Consistent, even when deployed as a makeshift defensive midfielder…

The Boa. Signed when he was just 19 years old, he’s been a fixture on the left-hand side, and has got better and better each season, chipping in with plenty of goals and assists…

My eyes lit up when Figo was interested in signing, even at 32 years old, I couldn’t say no. It’s no coincidence that we won the league the season after him and Rui Costa joined…

The handsome b*stard himself. He saved us so many times with goals and assists, whether when starting, or coming off the bench to make an impact. £2m very well spent…

Amaral showed early promise as a winger, but it wasn’t until I moved him up front with Coelho that we finally saw the best from him…

And last but by no means least, this absolute beast, and quite possibly one of the best free transfers you’ll ever see. He had a couple of off seasons and wasn’t without injuries, but most of the time he scored at least 20 every season, and provided his fair share of assists as well…

Before I bring the curtain down on this story, here’s a quick look at the squad I started with a decade ago. The days of Bully and The Frog seem like an eternity ago now…

And 80 signings later, here’s the squad I ended up with. Nuno would be proud…

Of course, those 80 signings wouldn’t have been possible without this man, Mr. Jorge Mendes. Thanks, Jorgey Boy!

And finally…

Thanks for joining me on this journey, I hope you’ve enjoyed it, whether you’ve been here from the start, or joined in along the way, every read, like and retweet means the world and makes it all worthwhile.

To answer Dave’s original question of “can a Portuguese influx work at Wolves?” well, yes it absolutely can, as long as you have a bit of luck on your side, and the patience of a saint.

I’m going to take a short break now (not 2 years this time!), but I’ll be back soon with my next blog, which is a twist on an old favourite, so I’ll see you soon. Adeus!
