When I’m 64

Welcome. The future is bright, but it definitely won’t be orange, as Holland didn’t qualify for Euro 2016. That bit is accurate. However the news that Louis Van Gaal is going in search of further honours will come as more of a surprise, though the Dutch maestro is in charge of the Italian national team rather than Manchester United. Can LVG retain the European crown he won in 2012? Are Aston Villa really going to win the Premier League? What’s with the Beatles song in the title when I’ve made it adbundantly clear this will be a Grease medley as we head to Greece 2016? I’ve ran out of questions, so let’s dive in.

League Cup

It’s still pointless.

LC Final 16

Wow, great penalties. In the answer to the quiz question “what is the minimum number of pens that need to be taken to conclude a penalty shootout?” this is the answer. Brian Little, take a bow.

FA Cup

I’m getting a bit sick of Brian Little you know. He’s everywhere.

He won’t be in the final though, saving us a repeat of the 0-0 thriller in the pointless cup. Damien Johnson’s Aston Villa have emerged as a real force. Steve Haslam has a lot to be proud of at Blackburn too, despite this loss.

The final is an extraordinary affair, where Villa take a 2-0 lead. This infuriates Mark Hateley goes into a fit of rage and inspires a 3-2 comeback win. Remarkable.

Champions League

To continue the Little-fest, Liverpool are up against Marseille. The French side are too strong for them though, setting up a final with Sampdoria.

Sampdoria have been the real form side but they’ve had 2 managers this season and not quite hit the heights. As it is, they fall at the final hurdle of retaining their Champions League.

Sampdoria are nowhere in Serie A either

Cesena. Of course. Gerry has done really well at Inter Milan. More on him later. Sevilla win La Liga.

What of Real Madrid? Well this happened

Jesus Sietes indeed. However, they still did enough to gain promotion. Well done David Unsworth

But for real badness, come home.

Premier League

Last time out you saw my Newcastle team struggling to keep our heads above water. The media always say one team gets sucked in, well, this side are in a lot of trouble:

With both goalies out and a full squad, a central midfielder is in nets. Sheff Wed are all of a sudden looking over their shoulders

Both of their keepers are out for 2 months, so I reckon I need to win 3 games to be absolutely fine. Let’s see how many that 42 goals against grows to.

Yep, Robson’s in trouble here

With 1 game to go, we’ve been able to maintain our Premier League status

Sheff Wed have a goalkeeper for game 37 and snatch a draw, luckily for them Norwich are useless.

So it comes down to the last day – Forest play Palace on Sunday, in one of those things that would never happen. At the top, there’s no fun to be had. Aston Villa are the Champions…

The 2nd Champions League place is up for grabs – Steve Haslam could stick a dagger through the heart of Darlington here

HASLAM! Champions League football at Blackburn for the first time since 1995. Great result for us in Cardiff – 14th is an improvement but now is the time to kick on and stop with all this lower half of the table rubbish. Norwich get a point but will it be enough?

It is! Goal difference condemns Forest to the First Division. Confirmation of Blackburn’s surprise 2nd finish.

Before we go to Euro 2016, look at this Beauty School Drop Out

To Greece!

Euro 2016

Marcello Lippi has picked this England squad:

Fashanu, Mainwaring, Shakespeare. All names who have had a huge impact on English history.

The hosts get off to a good start

Lippi takes on his home country and apparent genius LVG

Justin Cox is a great name. What year is it!?

Jody Izzet – or Jizzet, if you will, is the modern day Beckham/Phil Neville type villain. This better get Lippi the sack. Some pride is salvaged at least.

How embarrassing

Scotland & Ireland are through, to help the English mood

But France are out, Portugal and Denmark seeing them off.

Simao!?

And the final group. How have Georgia made it this far!?

Goodness me. Quarter final draw:

Just as England fans are deciding who to switch allegiance to, Scotland catch England syndrome and the Irish are knocked out too.

Italy and Germany must be the heavy favourites but they’ll meet in the semis.

I make Italy favourites, the Italian clubs have been consistently good in Europe for a number of years now. Semi final time!

What a game in Oaka, and a mighty mauling in the Olimpic Stadion. Portugal vs Italy then

LVG retains! Louis Van Gaal’s army!

Let’s end with some good news. Beardsley has decided to carry on for another year

His stats are so bad he’s unrated in several areas. Great news for Rotherham.

Why did I make the title this Beatles song? Well, LVG is 64. Who else is 64?

Gerry! What a shame. The Spain experience has sapped his enthusiasm. It’s also goodbye to Roy Evans

To finish with, here are some awards

Damien Johnson being Premier League champion and Manager of the Year. Wow.

So before you all rush off to get your money on Italy to win Euro 2016, just remember, the Premier League is upside down…

Failure Gerry

Good morning. This is an iconic update because you will feel a sensation when you read it. What is that sensation? Well, we’re going to pass into the future. It may sting a bit, but we’ll carry on as normal. So, can anyone knock Villa off the top? Can I stabilise this Newcastle team? Let’s find out.

As you’re probably very aware, there’s a European Championships this summer. In this upside down universe, Gerry Francis is the Spain manager, and everything Gerry has touched in this game has turned to gold. So he’ll qualify, surely?

WHAT!?

No playoffs in these days, and Spain are out. You’ll get a right slap for that, Gerry.

Only one outcome really. The mullet is available for any club in need. Given that Spain have now utilised me, David Unsworth and Gerry Francis, it may be time to move away from the English managers,

Well, he was only appointed at Sampa four months ago. What an odd chap. Anyway, Gerry to Sampdoria?

Nope, they opt for former Man Utd player Matteo Pelatti. Gerry for Inter?

Hmm, it would be a way out of this monstrosity. But no, I’m here to do a job. Gerry, it’s all yours.

Speaking of David Unsworth, his Real Madrid side are going through some things.

So odd. However, they’re actually on the up

Barcelona B still rubbing it in. Enough of this continental stuff, let’s get back to the Toon.

That will not help. Morons, everywhere.

Spare a thought for Roy Evans

Just retire man. Yet another club who wants my services. It’s a no from me.

Must have been a strict requirement for a David. Whatever.

Things have been rubbish, I’m not going to lie. We rarely win. The problem lies in that we just can’t defend. Also, look at these average ratings

Woeful. Whether we stay up or not, there’s a big overhaul needed this summer. Away from my problems though, we have our first finalists of the season

Brian Little. Again. He loves the league cup. Man City under Mark Hateley showing a return to form. There’s a repeat of one of the semi finals in the FA Cup:

Steve Haslam’s Blackburn are in there, along with recently appointed David Platt’s Palace.

In Europe, Sampdoria are looking to be the first team to retain their trophy since my Sevilla side in 2010

PSV were last year’s beaten finalists and there’s a repeat of that final in the semi finals.

Oh look, Brian Little’s in the semis. He’s omnipresent this week.

Fortunately, he’s well off the pace in the league, though a couple of games in hand could get them in the top 4. No chance of a title win though. Damien Johnson has held Villa’s challenege strong, I thought they’d have fallen away. Kieron Dyer is a relative managerial rookie but they’re very much in with a shot.

It’s not looking great for me but we have a 5 point cushion, which will hopefully be enough.

Wimbledon and Middlesbrough look pretty ruined so hopefully it’s just Forest we need to hold off.

So here we are, in the future. The Premier League is upside down and Newcastle are still struggling – some things never change.

Join me next time for the finale to the 15/16 season which will include Euro 2016 – from Greece! But will Marcello Lippi still be hopelessly devoted to England up against Italy?

Stay tuned for that plus many more terrible puns next week. Bye for now.

Never go back?

What are we doing here? We’ve only bloody well caught up to the current season. Unsurpisingly, the game doesn’t have mystic powers and very few of this saves happenings can be compared to the real world. Wait until you see how the table is looking! But of course, some things never change, and there’s a new manager in the hotseat over in Madrid. Come with me to the not so distant past…

We’ll start in Spain because I have bigged it up in the intro. Remember when Real Madrid were relegated to the Segunda? Well, in a rare act of patience, the Real Madrid board stuck with their manager all summer. Then sacked him 2 games in.

No goals in 2 games? Sack.

Now, allow me a tangent here. Things haven’t been going great for David Unsworth at Sheff Wed, so he’s sacked.

Unsworth is, of course, the former Spanish national team manager which to Florentino Perez (or his fictional equivalent) means box office appointment. Welcome, Senor Unsworth

Yep. It’s improved quite a bit over the 10 games, but they still have the indignity of being below Barcelona’s B team.

Back home, my stadium has been expanded.

It’s nearly at the 52,000 SJP houses today but it is about 15 years later than planned. Mind you, Newcastle have been down to the 4th tier in that time, so we’ll let them off.

In all truth, we haven’t made as much progress as I would like. We still can’t defend and it’s our achilles heel – old habits die hard it would seem. The league table doesn’t make great reading, as you’ll see later on.

Charity Shield kicks off the season, and it’s a Merseyside derby!

Great. For all the players are non-entities to all but the most avid of followers, fortunately the managers are creating the headlines. Remember when Unsworth got sacked earlier?

Yes, Robson’s done a U Turn. It’s an odd move, given how good Darlington are.

Well, he is a former England captain so we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. I’m sure he knows what he is doing.

That does leave a vacancy at one of England’s dominant clubs…

It is tempting…but I need to finish the job here. One day I’ll be back, Darlington. Darlington opt for Kieron “122 Caps for England” Dyer instead

Wonders never cease. Another England legend is in managerial news too

West Ham are keen not to waste loads of “DB” branded training clobber, so they’re straight on the phone

What is going on? The Hammers are marooned in the First Division, so that’s not going to happen. Thanks anyway.

FA Cup managerial genius Steve Gritt is on the dole

Hull appoint Nicky Barmby – is my mind deceiving me, or did this actually happen at some stage?

One last bit of managerial news, Sampdoria are currently the team to beat, but their manager has retired. They’ve moved for Milan’s boss to keep them going

Which brings us nicely back round to the theme of today’s post – look who’s back at the San Siro

With that, you’re up to date. Here’s the Premier League table:

It’s upside down! Aston Villa, under the guidance of Northern Ireland stalwart Damien Johnson, are the unlikely leaders. Alvin Martin’s Chelsea are in hot pursuit.

We’re doing better than this stage last season, and indeed better than Newcastle in the real world. So these are positives I can cling to. We just can’t defend. Bryan Robson must regret his decision to return to Sheff Wed at the moment, given how well Dyer is going at Darlington. Le Tissier has been relegated with Arsenal before, and it may well happen again at this rate. He has won a Premier League with them too, mind.

So that’s it, in the next update we’ll be perilously close to the present day. I’m expecting some sort of Back to the Future scenario where me and Gerry Francis need to repair time in order to return, but we’ll see. Gerry is trying to qualify for Euro 2016, so I won’t disturb him. Until next time!

Real-egation Candidates

It’s the end of 14/15 and as we catch up to real time, things are nowhere near how the world is today, but there are some similarities. For one, Newcastle are in serious danger of relegation from the Premier League – can I emulate John Carver (urgh) and keep the Magpies up? Well just steady on, you’ll find out soon. First though, it’s pointless Cup time.

League Cup

Liverpool are involved, for a change. Having won this in 2011 and 2012, they’re up against 2008 winners Man City here.

A very busy 3 minutes there, but it’s Liverpool and Brian Little enjoying success again.

FA Cup

The semi finals carried some great stories, none more so than Steve Haslam taking his Blackburn side up against former club Darlington.

Chelsea and Everton have to do it all again, with Ian Snodin’s men coming out on top.

Darlington will be heavy favourites but my old mate from Sevilla has a blinder in the final and Everton spring a surprise.

Bryan Robson loses yet another final, I’ve lost count of his nearly moments.

Champions League

Sampdoria put out holders Bologna in the quarters and as they top Serie A, they must be strong favourites. They’ll meet 2013 winners PSV in the final

Super Sampa it is!

Sampdoria go on to retain Serie A, prompting their manager to retire in a blaze of success. It remains to be seen who will take over.

Spanish football is on the decline, with no Spanish sides in the last 8 of the Champions League. In fact, Europe’s biggest club is in huge trouble

The great irony is that they are now in the same division as Real Madrid B, and they will go head to head next season. Rafa in?

Before we can laugh at that though, I have my own relegation battle.

Premier League

The run in started pretty well for us

But that was as good as it got, and annoyingly teams around us keep picking up points. We go into the last game of the season in a bit of bother

With nobody officially down, it’s any 3 from 5. We’ve got a crunch game with Burnley which I suppose statistically is the best game we could have

A win doesn’t even guarantee us survival, but we emphatically do all we can. Cross your fingers!

So glad we weren’t relying on Arsenal – cheers Le Tissier. Gordon Milne does me a solid though, and we’re safe. Phew!

At the top, Liverpool actually win it at a canter in the end.

Brian Little has had a disgusting amount of success. Darlington take the second Champions League place, and Arsenal come nowhere near retaining their title.

Everton also fall from 2nd to 14th whilst confirmation of our survival is well received. No prizes for guessing where we need to improve!

The average ratings are fairly grim too, except the two keepers

The good news keeps on coming for the Geordies – Peter Beardsley has taken Rotherham to promotion!

Leaving himself as an unused sub. So selfless.

He did play himself 53 times though. Not bad for a 54 year old.

In even better news, he hasn’t retired. Get in.

Let’s finish with some awards

Rotchen…I MADE YOU! He won’t admit it. One day, I’ll buy him again. Not sure about Forest goalkeeper Mervyn Gill being player of the year mind.

So that’s it, another season has come and gone. We’re in the rather odd scenario of heading into the 15/16 season now, we’ll pass real time and it’ll be strange. But together, we can do it. See you then for the Real Madrid derby.

Thrown to the Wolves

Welcome back! We’re flying through the 14/15 season and we’re catching up to the present day at an alarming rate. Unfortunately for me, in every sense, Newcastle are as terrible on this save as they are in real life, so no let up for me either way. Enough of this moaning though, let’s get to it.

In the last update you may recall during my round up of managerial movement Wolves were left without a manager after Alvin Martin left for Chelsea. Wolves moved for a manager who is clearly highly rated

Why is he highly rated? Well after taking his first job in October 2009 he’s already onto his 4th club, being poached each time. He did however relegate West Ham so he’s very fortunate so get a top flight job so quickly. We’ll see how Hucks is getting on later.

David Beckham’s managerial career has been a mess so far, but at least he has the stones to call it a day when things are getting rough.

Hmm, this is a bit suspicious. Where is Beckham from again?

Anyway, it’s working for him as West Ham sit in the 6th and final playoff place.

Up at Newcastle, we’re still terrible but we’re scraping together just enough points to sit in 17th. We’re just so porous, we concede in huge numbers. My goalkeeper debate had seen Mewza take the gloves, but this mess over December saw him dropped:

We led that Forest game 3-0 as well…we could have done with those points. The Swiss with no technique has now taken on the job and has 5 man of the match awards, he’s definitely made a difference.

The pointless cup saw some heartbreak for Huckerby but Brian Little, who seems to get to this stage every year, booked yet another Wembley appearance

Both sides are out of the FA Cup though, with Division 2 Bradford still flying the flag for the football league whilst Darlington and Sheff Wed went toe to toe in the battle of the big boys. A big one for Bryan Robson that, having left Sheff Wed for Darlo.

The semi final draw gives nothing away due to the 2 replays

My old mate Steve Haslam is the Blackburn manager, so he’ll be up against either the club that brought him through the ranks or the club that made him a star. I love a good story. Carl Serrant manages Bradford, which isn’t so much a story as just an amusing anecdote.

Whilst Everton will take on Bradford there, they’re also still in the Champions League. How they’ve achieved that under Ian Snodin I don’t know, but they’re in the semis!

That’s holders Bologna going out in the all Italian battle, whilst 2013 champions PSV are still in the mix. Matt le Tissier’s Arsenal have been very quiet since winning the league and sit a disappointing 8th, their season is as good as over now.

Whilst we’re in Europe, there’s a big story developing in Spain

Their manager has upped sticks and moved to Espanyol too, obviously not wanting to have the shame of relegating one of the largest clubs in the world on his CV. Neil Finn and Dave Oakes are still there, which may be part of the problem.

So the tables to finish up then:

Huckerby! What a career decision. Though Brian Little’s games in hand may see them win, Huckerby’s side are more than decent, and you can’t ignore David Unsworth’s Sheff Wed, who are in the mix. Haslam’s defensive skills are in full show at Blackburn…

At least Man Utd are rubbish too. We’ve conceded the most goals in the league, it’s fairly terrible back there. Nick Barmby replaced Chris Waddle at Burnley and they’ve had a decent little run, whilst Liam Daish is slowly killing Birmingham. Mark Hateley probably regrets leaving Wolves for Man City a few years ago.

So that’s it, we’re all set up for an exciting end to the 14/15 season. As Destiny’s Child said, can you keep (Newcastle) up? I wouldn’t bet on it, but that’s the plan. See  you soon

Beardsley’s Borrowers

The 14/15 season should be a season of celebration for me – afterall, I’ve been slaving away getting Newcastle back into the Premier League for a few seasons. Now we’re back on the big stage and reality has dawned – we’re really not very good.

We were dealt a very early blow when Liverpool took advantage of Denis Irwin’s re-gen having a big club release clause. I just didn’t see it coming!

I’ve decided to take on this McGibbon character in exchange, the money means very little to me given that we can’t attract anybody. I firmly believe the most important player in this game is your goalkeeper, in theory this guy should be unbeatable

Unfortunately that technique stat seems to have more of an effect than I anticipated, meaning he’s just another average goalkeeper to go alongside my other 3 or 4, which include Chilavert’s re-gen re-gen. When you’re onto the 3rd iteration of a player…

My other choices? The keeper I signed for Norwich:

A man with caps for Scotland!

And some other messes with crisp packets for hands. They’ve all had their moments but it’s costing me points. Might be one for twitter to solve.

We actually started pretty well

It’s been largely downhill ever since though. More on that later.

You may recall Kieron Dyer retired, with 122 England caps to his name. Not only have I signed his re-gen, but the man himself has gone to coach Bari

It’s early days for the future Jungle celebrity but it’s not looking good

There’s plenty more managerial shenanigans, Spurs need yet another new manager

They’ve rather strangely appointed former Arsenal goalkeeper Jae Townley

What’s more surprising is that they sit in the playoff positions in Division 3, so maybe some better times head for Spurs.

Giggs is sacked, again

There’s also big news as the one surviving original manager is sacked.

My former for Chris Waddle, way back in the Division 2 days with Darlington, has been in charge for about 17 years but Burnley have seen enough. About time.

For some, it’s all just too much

Chelsea continue the bizarre tradition that this game has given us, which is appointing Alvin bloody Martin

A big favourite of this blog is Peter Beardsley and his refusal to retire. Pitching up as Rotherham’s player manager, there’s no sign of him slowing down, continuing to start himself in every game. However, he has loaned EVERYBODY

To be fair, you never know when you’ll need 6 right backs. Pedro himself is 53, going on 54, and has 3 goals in 24 games. Good man.

Away from our perilous league position, we’ve scrapped our way into the last 16 of the pointless cup

I imagine Brian Little will end our run but any sorts of victories can’t be sniffed at when you’re in our position. What is our position you ask?

Well, we’re not in the top 12. The familiar sight of Darlington & Liverpool scrapping for superiority, Darlington wowing the world with their goal a game ratio.

Urgh, there we are. No wonder Burnley sacked Waddle. Fortunately I have plenty of good favour with the board and they’re still delighted by my performance. And so they should be.

Squad is a mash of names that will mean very little to you!

So we’ll be fighting to stay up, join me next time where I’ll hopefully have some good news as we move towards the business end of the season. Bye for now

Champ Man & Me: Lee Rothery

Hello! Welcome to another edition of Champ Man & Me. My guest this time is Lee Rothery, also known as Commitee_FM and the author of The Journals of Hampus Widgren. Intrigued? Well, you should be. Let’s find out more…

Thanks for taking the time out to speak to us Lee. Can you tell us about your site; The Journals of Hampus Widgren?

Firstly, a huge thanks for allowing me to be interviewed! Of course, basically, I was playing a long term save and was thinking to myself that I never seem to be able to remember any of my saves in detail so I wanted to create a blog. Initially for me but then other people in various Facebook groups became really interested in it, which really inspired me.

It was 2059 in game and I said to myself that the next Physio name I see, I am going to retire my current Manager and start with another (within the same save) and create a new character starting from scratch. So I loaded up a load of 1.5* leagues and took it from there and ended up in Belarus.

Initially I started it with the intention of a  simple career update thread but now I am looking to expand upon this and indeed I recently released my first interview I conducted as part of my ‘Meet The Managers’ series. Groups such as FM Central and individuals I admire such as Cleon, Chris Darwen, Rashidi etc have given me some good advice so this is my way of paying that back into the community whilst allowing me to continue enjoying my writing. My hopes are that as my blog continues to expand in popularity it will then enable me to showcase new writers too which is my aim, as well as give me a chance to interview people I really admire.

What made you decide to start writing?

Writing is not actually new to me at all, I have been writing for a number of years. At University, I used to write music reviews, album reviews, film reviews as well as that I have kept journals since I was 17 and I am 32 now! Further to that, I am a published poet and a musician and I only ever write my own songs.

It was only recently I thought why not have a go at combining my passion for FM and writing and so far it’s gone really well. I’ve had some wonderful feedback so far. I really want to keep going with it but it’s just fitting it in as well in amongst my many other interests.

What are your memories of CM97/98? I appreciate it was a long time ago!

It was indeed a long time ago, my over-riding memories are many nights saying to myself ‘1 more game’ but even then I was slightly anal about things which I still am. In those days, I used to choose ten attributes per position and then add them up on paper to give my players a rating out of 200! It was a great game though! I remember a guy two years older than me managed to install the game in the IT room at school, it lasted 2 months until the teacher found out and we were busted. It was so much fun! In terms of my own saves I can’t for the life of me remember who I managed but I do remember scribbling down tactics in many a Science class and printing out my squad to show my mates. One of my favourite players of that series is Erik Nevland, he was superb! It also had a nice skin.

Do you have a favourite version of the series?

I would have to say either FM08 or FM14. I’m a bit of an OCD nut and I love the FM08 font and skin! Yes I am sad but for me little things like that make the game easier on the eye. FM14 because well, I still play that now, I do plan on coming back to the series though for 2017. It will be a huge step up! I was also a part of a clan in FM14 online for the SI games forum so I have some good memories from it. For me FM14 is perfection. I love the tactical creator but more so I love micro managing training, transfers & finances. It’s really interesting and I’m hardly ever bored playing as I look to only ever be spending 40% of any wage budget I get given (Can you tell I’m a Yorkshireman).

Everybody has at least one FM story – what’s yours?

There are so many to choose from and honestly I could talk at length about taking Harrogate Town to Champions League winners etc etc but my most recent highlight was when I was managing Elgin City, it took me 12 years to get them from league 2 to the Scottish Premiership and in my 2nd season I finished 2nd and go to the group stages of the Europa League. Our first group game was PSV away, can you imagine my shock, my unadulterated joy as we battered them 5-1! One of my best ever performances! (We finished 3rd in the group).

What’s your take on the #Wearethecommunity movement? Do you get the chance to read much of the FM Community’s work?

Firstly, I am new to twitter so I can only talk about my experience so far. I think in principle the idea is a very good one, however do I feel it’s doing much for new writers? From what I’ve seen so far I don’t think it does. I only say this because it seems people are only promoting work they like as opposed to anything new. I mean no offence to anyone and as I said I am new so I could be totally wrong. I probably am, it just seems that way! It seems to be the same few people who work tirelessly to promote new content. However, it’s a fantastic tool Twitter, I’ve already made some nice friends and even thinking of starting a podcast with someone, I won’t say who with yet!

This is why if I can achieve half of what Cleon has done by showcasing new writers I will do my best as I think it’s important to absorb as much varied work as is possible. I wish SI games could showcase people more as well, they could really do a lot more to encourage people.

At the same time, I think people should still write and eventually you’ll find an audience, other than my blog I have some of my work published and some of my work rejected. I pursued feedback and decided to continue writing in my own style. I did think of tweaking it but the positivity I received far outweighed the negativity and I always ask myself the same question – would I enjoy this? If the answer is yes then you’re on the right lines. This is not limited to FM either I’ve had several of my poems & stories rejected but I keep doing it for my sins!

Yes I read loads, I must admit I find 99% of FM You Tube videos as dull as dishwater; I even tried my hand in them but got bored by my own videos. There are just two I recommend which are ‘Bust The Net’ which is so entertaining yet really informative, no one else is covering every aspect the way he does. He shows that by playing the game in a simple manner you can be a success. It really opened my eyes on so many things. The other is IstanbulNLGaming – I will let you look that up, some great work on training, PPM’s etc.

In terms of reading, well, would it surprise you if I told you that I am currently looking at 77 bookmarks of work I need to catch up on, there is some fabulous content, some I prefer to others but I would still be happy to promote them. I really hope this does not exclude anyone but I can only name my favourites in this short article, in no order my absolute favourite writers are:

Chris Darwen – his search the stats methodology have been a huge influence on me.

Cleon – He has been so nice to me and very supportive – a really nice guy and every article he writes encourages me to load up my game. If I’m ever bored of the game I read his works.

Rashidi – I am so thankful I have him on Twitter now, we have exchanged a few messages and again he has helped me a great deal, you really need to check out his Bust The Net page but also his old works such as when he took Stafford Rangers to the heights of Champions League winners!

A guy called Ben who apparently now resides in the FM Now forums, he did an amazing piece on managing Vitoria Setubal.

Alex Stewart who’s work in his moneyball series was so inspiring

Guido Merry – his articles are fantastic, again not related to one thing either, so varied.

There are many more I could mention!

In terms of podcasts, I really like what FM Central produce, they have a weekly FM podcast which is usually interesting and I was lucky enough to be invited on the show a while back, it was a lot of fun and Paul who owns it does a lot of work for the community and of course the Deep Lying Podcast, really great listen, if you see this – I want to come on the show!

Let’s talk real life for a second – which team do you support?

FC Halifax Town – I really do wish everyone would support the team where they were born. I love the affinity and community spirit within the club, we’ve had it tough the past few seasons going bust and then having to start again in the toilet leagues. Now though we’re very much an established Conference side and I firmly believe we should be a League 2 team. We also have a repertoire of developing great strikers and selling them on, such luminaries include Lee Gregory, Geoff Horsfield and England’s Jamie Vardy and recently we did it again in the window just gone selling Shaun Tuton to Barnsley. All season, we have looked doomed but now Jim Harvey is in we’ve been playing so well and at the time of writing we are enjoying a 10 match unbeaten run in the league!

After I had trials at Bradford City & Huddersfield Town and telling a Liverpool scout to F-Off I actually played for Halifax Town from the ages of 15-17! I was gutted then they released me.

Unfortunately, after deciding to leave my job in the corporate world and deciding to become a full time football trader I don’t get to see them as much anymore despite living a brisk 15 minute walk from the stadium.

If you could change anything about the FM series, what would it be?

This is easy, I would change two things:

1 – You are only allowed one save and have to progress naturally as you might in real life.

2 –  You are only allowed to start as un unknown and more importantly your first job should be with an under 18 team and you must work your way up

Dutch Delight in Deutschland

There’s so much going on in today’s update I don’t know where to start. I mean, I do, I’ll start with the pointless Cup as always but humour me for a moment. We’ve got Newcastle’s battle for promotion, World Cup 2014 and an all English UEFA Cup final. Take a breath, calm yourself and read on…

League Cup

Oh look we’ll start with the League Cup. I’ll even be polite and call it by its proper name. Who’s having a nice day out this year?

Ian Snodin! That’s who! Darren Huckerby tastes Wembley defeat but he’s got bigger problems to come. Everton though maintain an interest in the double

FA Cup

Semi final time first, Huckerby is here too. However it’s an old stager who grabs the headline

Roy Evans will take Palace to the final, where he’ll face Alvin Martin’s Wolves. Bryan Robson continues to be a nearly man.

The final then, Evans or Martin? Urgh.

It’s 0-0 first time around, which I bet was a thriller. The replay is a more chipper affair though, and Roy Evans won. So isn’t that nice for Roy. Weirdly, it’s Palace’s 3rd FA Cup win of this game.

Champions League

Moving on to the Champions League, the last 4 is just all over the place

Bologna win the battle of Italy whilst PSG knock out Ajax. It means we will have a first time winner

Bologna it is! Milan win the Cup Winners Cup too, so it’s great times to be Italian. The UEFA Cup is a different story though

Matt Le Tissier has been in charge of Arsenal for 11 years but this is his first trophy – and to think he got Arsenal relegated in 04. Can he add the league to his CV though?

Premier League

With one game to go, it’s Arsenal’s to lose

Ian Snodin’s Everton are the only team that can stop them, with both guaranteed to take the Champions League places. At the bottom, Huckerby has taken West Ham down and Norwich are long gone (sorry again lads). Chelsea, Wimbledon or Sheff Wed will join them – Unsworth hasn’t really had much of an impact at Sheff Wed, despite them having a great side.

The results are in..

Sheff Wed get out of jail free, and Wimbledon are gone. Everton fail against Haslam’s Blackburn so the title is Arsenal’s regardless, but they win to condemn Wimbledon at the same time as they win the league. Le Tissier, what a guy.

Final table for prosperity

Ok, ok, Wolves have to play Palace the following day and I forgot to screenshot the table but I can tell you they drew and finished 6th.

It’s curtains for Wimbledon though, so much for 40 points being a safety mark.

Before I go on to my promotion campaign, look who is back in work!

What’s odd here is that Rotherham were relegatedo ut of the football league in 1999, so have only just come back now. They’ve got no real players (except Beardsley now) but I’m surprised Beardsley has had to drop down this far, he was only in the Premier League last season. He is, however, still playing aged 53.

Division 1

With one game to go, we’ve got a tricky looking home fixture with Charlton where we’ve got it all to play for.

Remarkably, we win and finish 4th to secure a playoff place

Bristol Rovers are our first problem

We just about slip past them, on to a final meeting with QPR. Ian Holloway has been QPR’s managed since 2002, it’s an update for the long time servants.

Anyway, unlucky Ian. WE’RE GOING UP!

I’m obviously delighted but can’t help but feel we will get destroyed in the Premier League. The average ratings weren’t exactly great

Oh well, future Dave’s problem. Right now, it’s World Cup 2014! In Germany…not Brazil

World Cup

Wilkommen! Marcello Lippi has picked the following squad

Hardly a household name in the squad. I had Sansome at Darlington, and Neil Finn is sitll knocking around. Sevilla goalkeeper Jepson is still a hero it seems, whilst Colin Young went from my back up keeper at Darlington to AC Milan’s number 1. Sometimes, I want to smash my head off the desk.

Anyway, Lippi has added some Italian style to this team. By that, I of course mean they are dull but effective.

Timmy! The Portugese are too strong though

It would be a great shame if England went out in the groups. Now that is sarcasm. As it is, a draw will see England through, and Timmy comes up trumps again.

Whilst the last 16 beckons for England, another Englishman is out of luck

Oh, Gerry. I think the Spain job is a step too far for your beauitful mullet. Here’s the group tables for your perusal.

Hosts Germany are also out, meaning both 2010 finalists are gone. Denmark are also quite high profile absentees after their success in the European Championships a while back.

The last 16 has kept a lot of the favourites apart, which bodes well for later in the tournament. Brazil vs Italy is the blockbuster fixture.

Lippi re-discovers that winning habit, it’s another gung ho performance

No such luck for Scotland, they’re out in tough circumstances

Brazil find themselves 3-0 down inside 10 minutes. Van Gaal was good as Barcelona manager, but he seems to be bloody brilliant as Italy boss.

What’s going on here?

The Moo brothers at the back there getting the job done. Good lads.

The last 8 line up is a mix, with England vs Holland an attractive prospect on paper but now that England have been Italianed, I’m not so sure

Oh well

Foeke indeed. The semi finals are as you would expect, with Holland getting the better of Argentina. Good old Jaliens.

Whilst LVG continues his great form

So it’ll be Dutch vs Dutch in the final. The German hosts will be pleased. First though, who’s third?

Portugal edged that then. Let’s get to the main event – Dutchman Loius van Gaal leads his Italy side against Holland. Conflict of interest?

Jaliens! The former Ronald de Boer does it again. Don’t forget who signed you.

Only 4 years later than scheduled, I bet 2018 isn’t in Russia though!

So we’ll look forward to that. Lippi will be 70 by then, just retire please.

Some awards to finish this epic update off

Magic. Well done Matt le Tissier.

Kieron Dyer has retired, fortunately I saw that coming and screenshotted him before his hung his boots up.

122 caps is close to a record. A favourite of mine retires

Internationally renowned gaffer Brian Flynn also calls it

I’ll never understand how that happened. Anyway, the good news is that Peter Beardsley has decided to carry on. As it stands, he is the only player on Rotherham’s books, and he is the player manager. We’re all rooting for you Pedro!

Champ Man & Me: Paul from FM Central

After a short absence, I’m delighted to say we’re back with a new edition of Champ Man & Me. We’re joined by Paul from FM Central, a resource site for all your Football Manager needs. I spoke to Paul about the site, his favourite memories of the series and the new #Wearethecommunity initiative

Hello Paul, thanks for taking the time to join me. FM Central is a tremendously popular resource site for not only FM content but there’s also some real-life analysis. Can you sum it up for us as a starter?

FM Central was born due to a burning love for Football Manager, we wanted to create a home for people to feel happy whilst talking FM, setting up the website we knew we needed to make a base for the followers we hoped we would get so setting up a facebook group we never knew it would explode how it did and now we are closing in on 6000 as we speak.

FM Central is a community based site, we focus on making sure people in our community have what they need, from guides to stories, from Graphics to the Online League. My main aim was to always make FM Central feel like a down to earth place, somewhere people wanted to be and wanted to discuss FM and in all aspects myself and my admin team try to do that, be it talking to myself on twitter to posting on the group.

How did you come to be involved with the site? Is this your first role within such a project?

I had set up a site with a previous group I helped on but the group was unfortunately on a downward spiral so I decided I wanted to make somewhere better, bigger and stronger. Looking into it and talking with some lads who wanted to make the move with me it became simple, I messaged them within minutes knowing the name I wanted to call the site and everything went from there, I am proud to be the owner of FM Central and I know the lads who help on it have the same passion for it which is great to know and see.

What are your thoughts on FM16? How does it stack up to other versions of the game?

I love this FM, the detail is fantastic, the additions to the game with prozone and making sections like the tactics easier to navigate in my opinion, it is nice they listened to views and implemented them.
I am a fan of the online additions but also wary of the need to please the younger generation in my view with the fast paced draft mode. As long as it does not effect the making of the full detailed version I shall remain happy.

When did you first catch the CM/FM ‘bug’?

The bug hit early, in 98/99 it took control, the early mornings before school getting up at 5am to get some games played, running home to finish a season, it was a time of my life I remember well, my teacher at the time also was a fan of Champ Man and he used to print off his team and bring it in when he made new signings, the old paper, with the holed paper strip on the side, classic paper for a classic game.

Obviously I’m a big fan of CM97/98, do you have any memories of this particular version?

This was my first ever Football Manager, my brother had built me a computer and he had borrowed the game off a friend, I was the only football fan in the house so games like this did not get purchased randomly and I had not heard of it, I was moving up to the older school at the time and they wanted a way to keep me from mixing with the wrong crowds it seems, well it worked.

I had no idea what I was doing when firing the game up and made many mistakes but it was the first time I played it, I remember I had played for two or three months straight when his friend wanted it back. I cried myself to sleep that night hoping my parents would hear and get me it back, little did I know my brother had already planned on the following version being in my stocking along with a new computer.

Everybody has a favourite save – what’s yours?

A save that lives long in the memory, Cork City, a visit to the Irish league in FM08 which would turn my management style forever. Taking charge I had always being save before that, Italy, England, Scotland, Spain etc but I wanted to try to and expand, i was now hitting the age of 19/20, I had got sick of the late nights drinking and replaced it with pretending to be at Turners Cross, I think it held about 7,500 but when I was done, that place rocked like it held 90k.

It started well, Andy Jackson, I still remember him now, I am sure he plays in Scotland and I signed a Polish winger, his name slips my mind but he was amazing, with the core sticking together we romped to 7 titles in a row, in that time bringing players like Alex Bruce to play in Ireland, the big issue was signing Irish players who had not come from Ireland so they did not count as home grown for the European Squads, I did get some good youth but not to many.

Well season 8 came round, we were in Europe again, the Champions League, we had touched the groups before but never settled in them and the draw was made… Tottenham, Inter and arghhh it slips my mind. Anyways I had no hope, we were tired by the kick off of the groups with our season coming to an end but we pushed on, picking up points and before we knew it, we had got to the knockout rounds! This dream continued till the last eight of the competition before going out 2-0 to Barcelona. We never reached the heights again in my four further years but it was a journey with the Irish minnows I loved and lived every minute of it.

#Wearethecommunity is a new initiative launched by the online FM Community, can you explain what the goal of this movement is?

When I approached a group of my close FM community friends with an idea I never thought it would take off, with support from the likes of Guido at strikerless I knew we would do well, his friendship is a reason that FMCentral does so well, support from friends in the community is vital in motivational ways more than anything.
The idea of it is a starting point in reminding Sports Interactive who the community is, the new fondness to promote FIFA Youtubers, Stats sites and others is something that we are not against but it seems that promotion of FM Content is down, the interest to share and promote the community was down so we needed to take a stand and do it ourselves. Now I am not saying it does not happen, we have the likes of @Cleon81 who I think many if not all would agree is a community leader in terms of giving back, he does so much and we can all strive to take a leaf from his beliefs in community giving.
The # is there to give people a chance to share work in a group, you select the # and you see a list, now is it about self promotion, maybe a little as you always want people to know you have a site, you do videos etc but the main reason I want this # and wanted to do this is I love content, I watch Second Yellow Card Daily, I read Cleon81 weekly when posts are out, I check out TheFMWhizzkids on facebook daily but I wanted more and at times it was a struggle where to start, who to see, who did others suggest. Now I can go on the #, see a recommendation and check it out, it is about people recommending others, if you see something you like, hashtag it and tell us why you like it, this will get others viewing. If you hashtag your own work it might not appeal but if your recommending others who you genuinely like, it has an influence and its more than a RT, it is a statement of: I like this, check him out and give him a follow if you do too.
If you could introduce one change to the FM Series, what would it be?
At the minute, I would fix prozone as for starters having both sides coloured the same on the screen is just stupid, who ever passed that through in design should be buying the beers for a month or two.
Many thanks to Paul for taking time out to answer my questions, head over to Twitter to check out the #wearethecommunity articles – you may as well follow FM Central whilst you are there!

Señor Francis

Welcome back to the madness – we’re catching up with real life at an alarming pace, but as we reach March 2014, things are about to be shook up to a whole new level. Newcastle are still scrapping away in Division 1 but prior to all of that, there’s more managerial stupidity to contend with.

You may recall the previous update ended with West Ham still looking for a new manager. That search has taken them down the rather odd route of Darren Huckerby

Huckerby brought Blackburn up from Division 1 and they sit in the top 8, so dropping down to relegation threatened West Ham is somewhat surprising. Having said that, West Ham were in the Champions league just 4 years ago, so maybe he can work his Huckerby magic.

Anyway, that pointless anecdote was not without good reason. Who’s in at Blackburn!?

Yet another of my Darlo greats is in the management game! Coming in at the top level is a big test for the former England defender, but then he did win the Champions League so nothing fazes him. Good lad. This is only the start of the stupidity though

Spain have had enough of David Unsworth successfully qualifying for tournaments, they need somebody else. But who? WHO!?

Oh for crying out loud. Gerry is going to win the World Cup isn’t he?

Darlo need a new gaffer, and they opt for local-ish lad Bryan Robson.

Oddly, Sheff Wed decide I am the man – I like to think Batistuta junior put in a good word

I’ve never been a fan of Wednesday’s though so I’m staying at Newcastle. David Unsworth returns to England to take the job on

Happy New Year! One more piece of news for you comes from Division 1 though

The World’s oldest player is on the free transfer market! I imagine he’ll find managerial work before long.

Over at Newcastle we’re having another late run at the playoffs, we’re just 3 points outside with 7 games to go.

As you can see, progress has been steady

It’s frustrating in many ways as we have Zidane, Weah & Ronaldo re-incarnated leading the attack but they are still developing. The problem is we can’t defend. We are the leagues top scorers though, so that’s nice.

Away from the rough and tumble of the football league, the league cup has got finalists!

Huckerby! Oh and Ian Snodin. It’s just all so odd.

The FA Cup will see both teams have a dress rehearsal for the final as they meet at the Quarter Final stage.

Alvin Martin is now at Wolves so it’s a potential grudge match for him if he goes up against West Ham. Roy Evans is still Palace manager, he’s got a decent cup record in recent times.

Europe’s elite is all over the place, I mean look at La Liga

I like Atletico Madrid’s chances – they are managed by former Man Utd player Matteo Pelatti and haven’t won La Liga during this game.

The Champions League quarter finals see most of the favourites bow out, including holders PSV.

The semi final line up is a bit unusual as a result

The all Italian semi final is one nobody saw coming.

World Cup 14 is just around the corner, this time being held in Germany. Just 8 years later than scheduled. Marcello Lippi’s England have a decent group.

I hope he loses every game and gets fired. Good luck to him, I hope England win.

As ever, here’s the Premier League table to finish

It’s looking like an exciting finish to the season, the league seems to have averaged out a bit but Matt Le Tissier’s Arsenal lead the way. Darlington used to finish strongly under Gerry, whereas Sheff Wed always fell away under Bryan Robson so we’ll see if that is the case.

Oh Norwich. I am sorry. Huckerby has games in hand that might save West Ham but Man City & Sheff Wed have both been heavily involved at the other end of the table in recent times, so it would be a shock to see any of those 3 relegated. I’m predicting a massive shake up at the end of this season either way.

Hopefully by then I will have managed to guide Newcastle back into the elite but who knows – joins me next time, won’t you?
