Rangers are making light work of cutting through the divisions but will a pair of Old Firm games halt their progress? Here’s Nathan with today’s post.
Afternoon everyone. I hope you are well. Welcome back to the upside down world where i have taken over Rangers and took them from Division 3 to Division 2. In the last update our second string won the League Challenge Cup which is for all league sides outside the Premier League. In this update we look to stretch our lead at the top and have another final to look forward to.
First up is a trip to our Old Firm rivals Celtic and we brush them aside with 4 first half goals. It’s an own goal to open the scoring when Murdoch overhits a pass back. Laudrup then volleys home Negri’s blocked shot. Johansson prods home our third after the keeper spills the ball at his feet. Laudrup grabs a 2nd before half time by scooping another deflected shot over the stranded keeper. Celtic get one back when Wright can only parry Sutton’s shot and Provitali reacts quickest to turn the ball home. Good start to this update.
Comfortable 2-0 win here against Airdrie. The first goal is a gift as the Airdrie goalkeeper Martin jumps to collect the ball but lands heavy and drops the ball to Cavaco who won’t score any easier than that. On the half hour mark some good quick passing releases Johansson who curls his shot into the bottom corner.
The second string huff an puff and finally in the 85th minute they get the goal. It’s a scrappy goal as we have 2 swipes at it before Van Vossen sneaks in and taps it in at the near post. Nice to get a clean sheet as well.
We lose our second cup final in the Scottish League Cup as Division 3 Aberdeen deservedly win. We lose Negri in the first minute which disrupts us instantly and 6 minutes later Paul Bernard fires a low shot past Wright. He then has a shot saved but the ball falls kindly for Jess to hit into the empty net. In the 16th minute Van Vossen pulls one back to keep us in the game. In the second half though McMahon scores with a header to put the game and the cup beyond our reach.
No cup hangover from us as we batter Stirling. Cavaco gets the opener when he diverts Fitzy’s blocked effort into the net. Fitzy then gets his 1st with a glancing header into the far corner. He adds a third in the 89th minute by powering a right footer past Chalmers in goal. Solid win
A big 5-0 win with all 5 coming in the first half. Van Vossen sets up 1 for Cavaco and 1 for Negri and Negri returns the favour and sets up 2 for Van Vossen. Van Vossen’s hattrick takes 18 minutes to complete as he smashes in his 3rd from close range. job done in 45 minutes.
Another dominant win for us here. Van Vossen and Negri again sharing goals and assists to make it 4-0 at half time before Negri gets injured. In the second half a mistake at the back let’s Rory Allen charge through and score to make it 4-1. Gazza scores from kickoff though before laying a perfect pass off for Fitzy to side foot home our sixth.
A fantastic game for the neutrals here as both teams push each other hard. St Mirren start brilliantly and take the lead thanks to Prentice’s placed shot. 7 minutes later they double the lead when Campbell breaks through and megs Richard Wright. In the second half Fitzy pounces on a defender who wanted too many touches and then slots it under the keeper. Gazza then sprinkles some of his magic dancing passing two then threading the ball through for Fitzy to grab his second and our equaliser.
Scottish FA Cup 2nd round time and we breeze past Falkirk. Ally McCoist gets a rare start and opens the scoring with a header. Cavaco then jinks past two lunging tackles before sliding the ball past Wilde. Late on Van Vossen tees up Gazza to hit a first time shot from 12 yards which flies past the keeper to wrap up the win.
We leave it late but Celtic hand the win to us on a plate. It’s heading for a boring draw until Boyd plays a suicidal back pass and Gazza delightfully picks it up and megs Gould sending our fans wild.
That’s it for this update. Let’s check out the league table and wider world.
15 points clear as we enter January. It’s only a matter time. Celtic meanwhile have work to do to secure that 2nd automatic spot.
Dundee United, who we’ve drawn in the FA Cup 3rd round, and Hearts fighting to get out of Division 3 with Aberdeen chasing.
In England Leeds are looking to get out of the Division 3 with Coventry and Sheff Wednesday leading the chase. Very tight in and around the playoffs.
In Division 2 Liverpool and Man Utd are flying ahead and fighting for the title. The playoffs are starting to take shape as well. Fair play to Sunderland.
In the Premier League Preston still looking to bring back the glory days not seen since Sir Tom Finney was flying round Deepdale. Chester and Oldham giving chase with holders Hartlepool trying to stay in the race.
The top 4 in Serie B looking to make a break for it.
Juventus running away with Serie A. The Milan teams slowly improving.
That’s it. Join me next time as we look to wrap up the title and try to get to another final. Until then Bottom’s Up!
