Hello All. It’s been a while since I did a blog but I’ve been given a challenge and a half by Santa. Let me explain.
The Blog Squad got together over Christmas to do a secret Santa. We were to buy a football shirt for each other and whatever shirt we received would be the team of our next blog. The Legend Deano pulled my name and he got me a stunning Doncaster Rovers shirt. The challenge is to win the Premier League with them. Doncaster are woeful on 97/98. In real life they had one of the worst seasons in Football League history, ending up in the Conference. We have a trump card though. With the shirt I received I also got an icon card, Francesco Totti. So for this blog Totti will start at Doncaster. Also as a nod to Deano I will sign 1 Welshman every season. Here’s a look at the current squad.
It’s not sparkling so we need to get a lot of players in ASAP.
Plenty of arrivals to help us start this season with Donny. Tim Blake is our Welshman for this season. He will help us out at right back and centre back. Now we have some players to support Totti, let’s get this show on the road.
August
Sometimes the game just doesn’t let you manipulate it the way you want to. Totti lasts for a month then goes straight back to Roma. At least we have some cash in the bank now though.
It’s been a decent start to the season. Totti was with us until the Orient game. We got absolutely battered in that game. Game of Month was the win against Hull. 2-0 down at half time we came roaring back to level 2-2 in the first 5 minutes of the second half only to fall behind again. Another 5 minute double in the 75th minute saw us pick up all 3 points and currently sit 6th in the table. Another Welshman has come in to replace Totti in the shape of Jamie Rickard.
September
We go unbeaten in September. A strong performance against Shrewsbury in a 4-0 win. We’ve brought in Mick Quinn & Graeme Tomlinson for some extra firepower. Dearden comes in from Brentford, He’s been a fantastic goalie for me in the past.
Game of the month is this barn pot of a game. We go goal for goal until 3-3, in between those 6 goals Slavin gets sent off. D’Auria then gets sent off and we go 5-3 up only to crumble and concede 2 late goals to draw 5-5.
October
We are flying! The goals are flowing freely and the defence and goalkeeper are in top form. We are top of the table but there are 4 of us all on the same points. Game of the month is all down to one man. The Micker. He makes his debut against Mansfield and scores all 4 in a 4-2 win.
November
6 wins out of 7 and 1 draw against Division 2 York in the FA Cup 2nd round.
Game of the month was this beating of Colchester. We were 5-0 up but the changes disrupted our flow and we conceded 2 sloppy goals. We remain top of the table for now.
December
We finally lose but it’s in the FA Cup in the replay against York. We get lucky against Cambridge with an 86th minute equaliser.
No such problems against Darlington though. Tomlinson is on fire at the moment!
January
A disappointing January sees us lose 3 on the trot in the league and we get knocked out of the Windscreen Shield in the Area Semi Final by Division 2 Blackpool. Wins against Peterborough & Scunthorpe get us back on track.
A crazy game of the month. We go 2 down against Scunthorpe but level things up before our keeper gets injured. I don’t have a replacement on the bench so we go keeperless. This inspires Dolan to a 6 minute hattrick which blows Scunthorpe away!
February
We play really badly against Shrewsbury and we deserved to lose. The win against Barnet is massive. They are top of the table before this game and we played brilliantly to beat them. We are 3rd which is still automatic promotion but we are right in the title fight with Barnet and Orient.
March
March is a nightmare as our team gets gutted! We lose 4 of our back 5 and top scorer Tomlinson with no time to replace them. The run in is going to be a grind. We managed to scramble a centre half and a defensive midfielder on deadline day but it’s no where near enough.
The results are good as we maintain our 2nd place and secure at least a playoff spot. The loss to Mansfield is the game after the transfer window closed which is not a good sign.
April/May
The wheels completely fall off in April. The goals dry up without Tomlinson and we slip into the playoffs on the last day.
We lose in the playoffs. We deserved to lose as well. we wasted so many opportunities it had a feeling of inevitability about it.
Season 1 done and it’s ending in sickening fashion. I’d forgotten why I hate lower league football but this is a perfect reminder. Join me for season 2 to see if we can keep our players and get promoted at the 2nd time of asking.
