Sporting Eeyore – Part 15: Triple Threat

Guten Bonjola and welcome back to Spain for the final update of season 5, and in fact our final for a few weeks. Father duties are calling and I don’t have the time or energy to play 3 or 4 nights a week at the moment. See you in September. Meanwhile, Gijon are top of the pile with a 5 point lead, with Barcelona lurking with a game in hand. Howay.

A huge game to kick us off as third place Atletico rock up at El Molinon. Things are great at 2-0 but decidedly less great at 2-2 after a very quick turnaround. Alex Martin settles our nerves with a hat-trick and some more breathing space over the chasing pack.

Deportivo are really struggling so it’s no surprise when we score after just 4 minutes. It’s somewhat of a surprise when they muster an equaliser and even more of a shock when we fail to score again. Ho-hum.

Espanyol are brushed aside. Onwards!

I swear Huegun scores every time we face Betis. He looks like he has overturned a deficit but Tony Roberts salvages a point.

Bakayoko has gone off the boil a bit after his incredible first half of the season. He’s back on the boil here with an 18 minute hat-trick as poor old Elche play 85 minutes with 10.

That sets us up nicely for the Champions League and the trip to Paris. Bakayoko is definitely back in form but the last 8 minutes see 3-1 become 3-3. That’s less good. But still good.

A nice win at Zaragoza, an often bogey side for us.

A remarkable El Clasico as Barcelona lead 3-0, Ronaldo gets sent off and that seems to inspire Real Madrid to come back and draw 3-3. Bizarre, but helpful for us.

FA Cup has gone mental.

Valladolid are no match for us, though Svensson’s latest one month injury is annoying.

We were so comfortable against PSG at one point but when Maurice opens the scoring we’re in trouble. Roberts equalises and we hang on for away goals success.

There wasn’t a good draw really but we stuffed Man Utd in the group stages.

Going down to 10 men in the first 8 minutes is not ideal preparation but somehow we take the lead and then Domingo from Little Oakley sees a straight red for a bad foul on Lucic. A late exchange of goals is fine and we win.

Oviedo are not a good side. Mickey’s injury for a fortnight is not the best news.

We’ve reached the time of season where we seem to be struggling to dominate games. Man Utd best us from the off and we deserve to lose. That’s a problem.

The Copa del Rey semi is just two days later. Bakayoko takes a chance, a rarity in this latter part of the season, and we’ve got a chance.

Another below bar performance sees Real Madrid control the game and only a late cameo from de la Sagra rescues a point.

Luckily we have a very healthy lead at the top. Can we see it through?

Bakayoko might have stalled but Tony Roberts has been the real star of this second half of the season. He scores all 4 past Celta and the annoying Dutruel.

Off we go to Manchester needing a miracle, more so when Nevland scores twice in two awful first half minutes. For some reason they find themselves down to 9 and we spark into life. Mulryne pulls one back and Lucic heads in a corner but there is no grandstand finish.

Meanwhile…Watford are in Division 1.

We’re in one final at least as we finish the job against Espanyol.

Back to league action and Nikiforov is off for another early bath, honestly I think age is finally starting to catch him. He’s been brilliant since day dot.

A narrow win over the girl from Brave puts us on the brink.

We could seal the title at home to Barcelona but we blow it in the second half. The squad is tired, or something.

8 points ahead with 12 to play for.

Logrones are beaten. Close now.

Obviously we lose our annual trip to Sociedad. The title party must wait.

NOT FOR LONG. Alex Martin edges us there against the bank.

Time to cash in.

Las Palmas host one big party and we play the best we’ve played in a while. Who cares.

We finish pleasingly with exactly 100 goals. 3 points better than last season’s tally and ultimately five better than Barcelona. Success.

The Copa del Rey final is at home which means we’ll lose and play like crap. That is what happens. It’s a known bug.

The squad played well from back to front really. Everybody did well, even the problematic wingback positions were fairly strong (Lauchlan played LWB most of the season)

Bakayoko’s season is still amazing but we was nowhere near as efficient in the latter part of the season.

You can’t knock 64 goal involvements.

The B Team absolutely smashed the Segunda. They still can’t be promoted, I need them to win the Copa del Rey.

This man is the main reason. He’s getting better all the time and other clubs want him but he’s under contract until 2007 so he’ll be ours for a lot longer yet.

That wraps us up for another season. We can add La Liga to our Copa del Rey title but now the focus will be on winning the Champions League. Firstly, we must strengthen the squad but then we’ll be back at it. See you in a few weeks, thanks for reading and have a wonderful summer.
