Building Brazil – Part 1: Samba Madeira

Rob Tait returns with a new concept save. He’s rocked up in the Portugese second division with a plan to build a team of Brazilians. Here’s Rob to explain more.

For some reason Brazilian players don’t seem to register as foreign when playing as a Portuguese team, I noticed this while playing a game as Sporting Lisbon. This got me thinking, could I build an all Brazilian team to conquer the Champions League. I wanted to start from scratch so I chose a division two side, I also wanted to choose a team who played in the Brazilian yellow and blue. In a little twist of CM fate Uniao Madeira fit the bill and also give a nod to another CM legend, everyone’s favourite fictional striker. Uniao has a funny squiggle above the a like this ã, but I’m not inserting a special character every time so, sorry if that upsets anyone, that also goes for any other letter with a special squiggle.

This is the squad and fortunately… I recognise not one…

The Golden Generation: Part 1 – Potty Training 101 – Qualification

Please welcome back Andrew Chapman to cm9798.co.uk. You may remember Andrew from the Gateshead series last year and he’s back with a look at England’s Golden Generation. How you ask? I’ll leave that to Andrew to explain…

Hello and welcome to “The Golden Generation” where we will follow England’s much feted players from World Cup 2002, but as wee bairns in 1997/8 attempting to qualify for and win the World Cup. Fast forward (rewind, whatever) to 2002, cast your mind back.

Sven had been in his post for 1 ½ years and had moulded together a squad of youngsters mixed with some experience to qualify top of a group including arch-rivals Germany thanks to that famous 5-1 thumping in Munich.

CM9798 Academy – Part 21: A change is as good as a rest

Hello and Happy New Year! I hope 2019 is full of great things for you all.

Here in 2004, things are a bit tetchy down the Academy. We’re struggling to make much of an impression on the Premier League and find ourselves down in 16th. I keep telling myself the team can only get better but the reality is, they will probably leave when that happens. Nevertheless, let’s see how we get on.

Here’s where we re-join the action:

The CM9798.co.uk Year in Review

I always sign off a year with a bit of festive cheer. It’s nice to take stock of what has gone before and set up for what’s ahead.

The whole purpose of this blog was to share CM9798 memories with fellow fans and I’m always blown away by just how popular this old game still is. I never go on about stats and things because frankly you can prove or disprove anything with statistics if you spin them the right way but as of this writing, this blog has had 166,000 views this year. It’s probably miniscule in the grand scheme of things but I don’t care. It means a lot to me that so many of you choose this little corner of the internet to reminisce about a great game and hopefully enjoy some good stories along the way. For those keeping score, there were 84,000 visitors last year so we’ve doubled up. What a world.

CM9798 Academy – Part 20: Regeneration X

Welcome back! Season 7 is about to get underway and it’s time to draw a line in the sand and to try and transform the Academy from a bunch of hopeless kids to the stars of tomorrow…today. After two seasons of narrowly avoiding relegation and only free transfers under 23 at our disposal, the chances of progressing to a decent Premier League club seem small. However, you may have recently read my article about finding regens and armed with that information, I’m going to hunt high and low. It’s important that they get game time and if we go down, so be it. We’ll be well placed to come back and be stronger for it.

Oh and there’s going to be even more people around to see it

The guide to finding re-gens in CM9798

Good day! You might notice I’m blogging more than ever at the moment – it’s amazing what you get up to on your days off work. Anyway, seeing as the Academy has reached the point where re-gens are key and I get at least one person on Twitter every week asking how to find a re-gen, let’s get this sorted.

Just in case you don’t know, every time a player retires on CM9798 (and most CMs for that matter) they regenerate as a younger version of themselves. Whilst they won’t be at their peak straight away, it’s an open goal in terms of development as you know what they will improve to become. I usually loan them out for a few seasons if I’m a big club but at the Academy we don’t really have that luxury, they need to learn on the job. With that in mind, there are only a few things to look out for.

Players in CM9798 still playing in FM19

Every year we do a check up to see if any players from CM9798 are still around in the latest Football Manager. Last year we found there were 27 players still playing and I don’t expect that number has increased much. With the retirement of Robbie Keane last week another one has bitten the dust, even if he is technically still on the game until the next update is released. How many are left?

Short Stories: Real Betis – Part 3

Hola! I hope you are ready for one last update from Betis, where I set out to investigate if this Real Betis squad is capable of winning La Liga. After a less than stellar start things really started motoring in the last update. Top of the table and still in two cups, what’s not to enjoy?

We pick up with 12 games to go and a 4 point lead.
