What’s your Beath? Part 15: The Chase

Hello! It’s the end of the season here in Cowdenbeath and we’re in the unfamiliar position of being able to see the Old Firm disappearing over the hill rather than our usual situation of wondering just how far down the other side of the hill they might be. It’s a long analogy but you get my point. We also have a European quarter final to look forward to. Cowdenfun for all.

Nothing says fun like Motherwell away. Weah Junior hasn’t really hit the heights of the last season but he comes up with the decisive goal here to secure the win. We’re going to need to be near perfect to catch Celtic though, let’s be honest.

In the immediate future though we have a cup replay with Celtic. I’d love to retain the cup and get one over these buggers but it’s like climbing Everest with a Twiglet – the delicious salty snack or otherwise. We fall behind early on but hang in and somehow Rod Wallace finds the testicular fortitude to equalise in injury time. We hang on for penalties which turns out to be a waste of time against the Neville Southall regen. He saves our first three and despite Poejo blazing over, a myriad of International stars do not miss. Damn.

Our anger is taken out on Partick Thistle.

It’s an ideal day for us as Rangers destroy Celtic.

So the gap is 5…

I was just starting to play Jeffers more too. Away he goes, no doubt due a return next season.

Lampard is off the mark, sealing the win over Hearts.

This is good money for somebody who we have outgrown.

An excellent scrapping win at Hibs keeps the momentum going.

£600k for this lad looks a steal. The problem is if he is any good he probably wouldn’t sign for me but that’s the market we play in.

£150k for Neil Bruce too. Who you ask? No idea. Goram perhaps?

Airdrie take some breaking down but hot Rod manages it eventually.

Now we go to Ibrox which is a pointless exercise if ever there was one. 3-0 inside 26 minutes. The Micker does clamber off the bench to reduce the arrears but it’s points not pride we need.

We’ll also have to overturn a deficit after a narrow defeat in Rotterdam.

Raith Rovers two days later…our tired bodies sneak the points.

Oh man. We need all the players right now. Curcic is released.

This is an important win but my concerns about Weah Junior are justified. Sure, anybody can miss a pen which we ultimately aren’t made to pay for…

But how can anybody have NINE SHOTS OFF TARGET???

Feyenoord feel the full brunt of our force. Even Weah Junior scores. At 3-2 up we were actually heading out so a big result.

No easy games in the last 4 but I think that could be worse

Remember Mark Hughes’ regen who upped and left us? He’s back. On Loan.

I’ve also signed this lad on a free. Off the ball, pace and shooting all 20? Yes please.

And finally Steven Hill on loan. Deadline week is complete.

Just in time for the big clash with Celtic. This time…Mowgli actually scores!

Back to 5 points…

From 2-0 down this is a great result in France. That is Alvaro Recoba and he’s very good.

Nice and easy at Hearts just two days later.

Oh, hello! The door is ajar.

It nearly wasn’t as we trail at home to Motherwell but hot Rod once again inspires us and we pinch the win.

Two days later and our tactic to injure the Stoitchkov regen early doors pays off.

We could have done with Celtic losing this, we’d have been level on points if they had. Ex-loanee Gattuso does he bit for us

1 point now the gap.

We’re 90 minutes from a European final and we play magnificently on the night. A late consolation makes it look closer than it was.

We’re off to Bilbao to play Arsenal!

A mixed bag…

Airdrie are blown away by Mowgli, finally playing like the regen of a Ballon D’or winner.

His reward is that somebody kicks him firmly in the ribs in training. He’ll miss the last league game and also the final.

Here’s the state of play

Dundee Utd could become heroes to me.

Hibs pose little threat. Our job is done.

All eyes on Celtic Park…

Noooo. Nicholls sees that as the last straw.

Third then. Our best showing by far but not enough.

Still, we could win the Cup Winners Cup. Here’s the 11 brave lads tasked with that

HOT ROD! Woweee

Somewhat outplayed but who cares?! We’ll be playing for the European Super Cup next season.

This is useful.

This is interesting. It confirms that Rangers are somewhat better than everybody and not just Cowdenbeath. It confirms that we will play them in the European Super Cup. But does it mean we will play Champions League football?

I suspect not – if the winners finished outside the top 2 then maybe but I would be amazed if I line up in the Champions League qualifiers in August.

Here’s the ratings:

The goals came from the forwards as you’d expect. Wallace’s 18 is probably the biggest surprise given his age but he’s a big game player.

No awards for us.

And all our money spent on 5000 seats. Great.

Only one regen actually wants to sign for us. Here is…the Micker junior.

I’ll level with you Ged, I’m a bit scared. We’ll see who else we can entice to Cowdenbeath next week but for now, keep your fingers crossed the people of Champions League HQ give us a call to fill up some qualifying spaces. That’d be just lovely.
