What’s Your Beath? Part 27: The Joy of Syx

Gooooood hello. Is today the day? Cowdenbeath begin the run in to season 10 with a three point lead over Celtic and a 6 point lead over Rangers. We’ve also got a Champions League Quarter Final and I suppose the FA Cup, but most importantly it’s time to try and get our first Premier Division. Let’s get to it.

Results like this will see our lead slip away. We go behind twice to Partick Thistle who get a man sent off somewhere in between. I suppose I should be proud of our fighting spirit but in reality I am sick of this set of bottling idiots. Just don’t tell them.

Tarlue scores twice in the same minute to try and crush Raith Rovers. As is our custom, we fail to keep a clean sheet but I just want all the points.

A great result over in Glasgow as Rangers defeat Celtic. My lead, amongst other things, is extended.

Tarlue loves a quickfire double as he sets us on our way at Tynecastle in the cup. This was a tough FA Cup tie but with Celtic already out, we have to take advantage.

We play Hearts in the league just 6 days later and they are so bad they don’t even score. Against us. How shameful.

Clydebank are an enigma. I don’t know how they do it sometimes but they’re doing great work.

We’ve really struggled against Celtic this year and our trip to Celtic Park ends in defeat. The title race is still on.

Rangers are having a bad week. More points dropped here.

9 games to go and Rangers are hopefully out of the equation. Celtic though remain very much on our case.

An odd one here as Celtic decide to sell a key player to their biggest rivals. I’m sure that won’t come back to haunt them.

Falkirk are the next to get Tarlued. He’s some boy.

Rangers lose again…

We have to take our eyes off the main prize for a minute as we nip over to Belgium for the Champions League. Ajao’s at the double to give us a strong first leg lead.

A wonderful game at Tynecastle sees 5 shots in 90 minutes and no saves to be made. The only victor is us, sat preparing for a trip to Dunfermline…

This team infuriates me. We get so complacent sometimes and we find ourselves 2-0 and 3-1 down to First Division Dunfermline. We manage to sort ourselves out to earn a replay but that’s another game we could do without.

Obviously it’s Brechin who await us if we can win the replay.

Rangers in the league and we fail to win but a draw isn’t the worst result.

Anderlecht make us sweat when they take the lead and their goalkeeper makes hundreds of saves but eventually Ajao saves face and the tie.

Auxerre knocked out Juve! And Hamburg did for Rangers.

One of the oddest lineups you will see in Europe’s elite club competition.

A draw at Easter Road is not the worst result on the face of it but it piles the pressure on us.

6 games to go for us and we’ll have to beat Celtic in one of them. Probably.

Off to Turkey and another ridiculous evening sees us ship four. Thankfully McInulty scores what could prove to be a vital third away goal. We always take the scenic route.

Two days later, off the flight and into FA Cup action. No reprieve for Dunfermline this time. We’re coming for you Brechin.

Yes! Rangers beat Celtic, Notman obviously scores and it’s looking rosier.

Win the games in hand and win the league. The games are mounting up though.

We win at Ibrox! Fine it’s against third division Brechin in front of a barely quarter full stadium but we have a job to do.

Are we going to talk about Airdrie 4-0 Rangers? Wow. What’s happened here then?

Airdrie have won Scottish Division 1 at a canter. Doesn’t really explain much. Wild that they lost 11 games less than second place and Dundee Utd are going to Division 2.

Anyway, let’s get the job finished. Clydebank are only good against the Old Firm.

As usual Partick take the lead against us but we come storming back to win 4-1.

Nearly there but we still have Celtic to play.

Before that we have to try and overturn a 4-3 deficit. Galatasaray pick up two red cards yet still score with 9 men. Pavdog, working back to full fitness after that injury lay off, drags us through.

If we can just avoid a loss to Celtic it’s in our hands. We fall behind after just 8 minutes and I get the sinking feeling. The kitchen sink is thrown and to the relief of everybody in blue, Ajao nets a late equaliser.

Breathe! Three games to go.

A week to remember, hopefully.

Raith Rovers hold firm for 40 minutes but Syx takes the game by the scruff of the neck. The game in hand has been won.

Rangers now can’t win the league.

So to Tynecastle, so often the scene of our disappointments over the years but we’re in front after 2 minutes. That’s good. Wes Brown gets sent off after 5 minutes. That’s bad. Hearts go down to 10 just after half time. That’s good. Stewart equalises for Hearts. That’s bad. Syx scores the winner. That’s good.

Man of the match? Bjorn. 38, called into action to play centre half for 85 minutes. Imperious. Ignore the cards, they had it coming.

Had about. Celtic have had an off day…

Which means…

THAT’S GOOD! We’ve done it!

This game against Montrose couldn’t matter any less. As usual it’s a goalfest.

96 goals is a good effort. 81 points is actually lower than our previous 2 seasons, ironic isn’t it?

We can make it a double in the Cup final. We storm in a 2-0 lead and it’s all very easy until Airdrie bring on a relative no hoper called Pouton who scores twice to take it to extra time. Hmm. We trade goals but Pouton completes his hat-trick. I don’t know how that has happened.

Give me strength.

Anyway, off we go to Germany to play Hamburg in the Champions League final. We win 4-0. Airdrie? A real struggle. Hamburg in the Champions League final? Not a bother.

Yes we have.

Yes it is.

Syx (Wilmots) is an absolute dream. Ajao isn’t far behind. Tarlue was a welcome addition. Even the wing backs averaged above 7. Unheard of.

So much to like about the squad. They’re just a bunch of daft buggers sometimes.

A quick versatile defensive midfielder who can play in any of the three DM positions.

Just one of the many reasons why I am manager of the year.

Weah Junior Junior gets the golden boot but otherwise, not much for the Champions of Europe.

That’s it then for an unprecedented season. Cowdenbeath are the champions of Scotland and the champions of Europe! Join me next week as we begin the challenge of retaining them both…
