Nowhere I’d Radebe – Part 15 : End of the road? | @Matt_C_Wills

Hello and welcome back – it’s still January for a few more weeks, or so it seems, but today we are in March 2002 and my all African Leeds team are perched atop the Premier League, 9 points clear of perennial challengers Man United with 12 games left. Here’s how it stands:

We’re also deep into the FA and Uefa Cups, could we finally make something of this challenge?

Well, if we want to keep treble hopes alive, we’ll need to overcome Man United in an FA Cup replay, an additional game we could probably do without to be honest.

Kanu believe it? This is bad news for my Nigerian national team aspirations with the World Cup around the corner.

Arsenal try to out-Africa us, but Liberian Christopher Wreh almost sink us but Kilana saves his penalty and we settle for a point a piece.

With a looming fixture pile up I need to mix the starting line up around a little. Stand in centreback Naybet lasts 4 minutes but we hold out against Blackburn thanks to another strike from Freddie.

This does mean Naybet is fully rested for our match up in Germany 3 days later. This time he lasts 24 minutes longer before disappearing injured. Finidi and Paschal settle things up and we’re into the semi-finals.

We’ll be back in Germany very soon.

That one match suspension seems very inconsequential now.

Back to League action now and high flying Plymouth seem to be the only team who don’t score one goal when we score three.

Amongst a fixture pile up, all these injuries to add to Bakayoko’s long lay off could crush all our dreams.

With that in mind, long term target Sunday joins on Friday to add cover at the back. Lovely bit of business.

The thing with making all the African countries EU compliant, other teams aren’t restricted either. Wolves threaten a late fightback but it’s another three points on the table for us.

The first leg of the Uefa Cup semi-final swings around and it’s all very professional, especially with no goals conceded, mainly thanks to our £8m man in goal.

FA Cup replay time, squeezed in on a Friday as the semi-finals are on the Sunday. To be honest to have a break is a bit of a relief and if anything has to give, it can be a competition we have already won before.

8 days rest is just what the lads need, Sheffield Wednesday succumb to our relentless attacking prowess

We feast on a juicy Hamburger in Germany with three goals without reply, Freddie missing the chance to make it a hat trick.

We’re really in the groove now, it feels like we’ll always score, so it doesn’t matter too much if we concede the odd goal.

Villa are the next to fall in our relentless pursuit of that first Premier League title, The Quicker sneaking off the bench to add a third at the death.

We’re back in action just two days later and my second string lads muster a Desmond against Wimbledon. I’ll take that given the closeness of matches.

Another game two days later and my rotated team creep past a stubborn West Ham, we can almost smell the trophy now.

All this lines us up for a potential title showdown with Man United, where a win would take us almost home and dry. Unfortunately we have a limited answer to Kiko and Scholes. Lovely to see Andrew Duncan work his way back to the top though.

That loss means we are six points clear, with two to play, but United have a game in hand. Our goal difference might be an advantage but a point form either game would jjust about do it for us.

We don’t have long to recover from the United game, two days in fact. This schedule is designed to punish you…

With the Uefa Cup final two days later I sacrifice potential points by playing my second stringers and Liverpool take no mercy on us, even if it would hand their hated foes the title.

My decision is justified though as we blow Espanyol away in the first half in Israel and European glory is finally ours!

While we were winning in Israel, United were drawing at Old Trafford and it’ll all come down to the final day. A point may be enough even if United win…..

But why make things easy for ourselves, we struggle to get the better of ten man Chelsea until hero of the season The Fredder scores late on to confirm the title is ours!!

It’s a lovely sight to behold. Man United were frugal in defence but we scored the goals that mattered to take the title.

Freddie has been immense for us all season

Squad performances have been good. Everyone played their part, well apart from N’Dong and Nwosu

Not sure if that is much to show for 5 seasons of toil?

Elsewhere, Man United lose the FA Cup to a former hero

But claim the Champions League against Inter

Freddie Captains and scores for France

My Nigeria team storm the World Cup group games, knocking out the hosts along the way

We see off a plucky Australian side right at the death thanks to Adrian Mole

Knock a lop-sided England team out in the quarter finals

Put a Ronaldo-less Brazil to the sword in the semi-finals

And beat Belgium by a single goal to become the first African nation to win the World Cup!

End of Season awards time and Freddie does well

Naybet retires

Well, we’ve achieved our goals more or less within the 5 season timeframe but the chairman has asked me to stay on for one more season and have a crack at taking Man United’s European crown so you’ll have at least three more instalments of this silliness to look forward to!
