CM9798 Academy – Part 29: Decade of destruction

Hello! It’s the tenth season of this idiocy and season 9 ended on the highest of highs. The Cup Winners Cup was retained and we added the FA Cup to a hastily assembled trophy cabinet. How do you top that?

We finished season 9 with the disappointing news that club legend Gareth Billing would be departing. Italian Frederic Morello will also be missed. Once again we face a summer of rebuilding.

To the free transfer list! For the first time in…possibly ever, a decent player is available. Canas here is a Spanish Under 21 who Sporting Gijon have decided to release. He looks rather good.

Canas

I also have high hopes for Zanetti, who is just 17 but looks like he has all the tools to be a good centre half.

Zanetti

Pavone here could be the answer to my right wing back problem. He’s solid if unspectacular but again he’s only 17 so he could get even better.

Pavone

Lawless I’m less confident about. Who is he? Why is he so unadaptable? He’s also only 16 though so one for the future.

Lawless

We get to play in the Charity Shield! A first. Maybe even a last. Here’s how we line up:

team CS

Obviously we’re 3-0 down after 32 minutes. Lukic restores some pride but McBoyaboy gets sent off. Ah well.

3-1 charity shield

The league season gets off to the best possible start as we score in the first minute. At 2-0 up we are cruising. Maybe the worm has finally turned? Nope, 2-2.

2-2 west ham

No worms turned in the 0-0 draw at Hull. A result that is every bit as dire as it sounds.

0-0 Hull

Now then. This is a result. Arsenal have been a bogey team of ours really. Lopez and that Su’ap fellow don’t score and we rattle in three. Magic.

3-0 arsenal

I think this is Peter Beagrie. Don’t hold that against him, I need all the help I can get.

rennie signs

A good point at Fulham keeps us unbeaten. I like this team.

fulham 1-1

I like it even more when we beat Blackburn. It’s 2-1 when Heddle is sent off but Lukic breaks away to seal the points.

3-1 blackburn

The win at Derby puts us top. Wow. Lukic is on fire so far this season and we head into the International break not on fire for the first time in our top flight history.

derby 2-1 S10

Our momentum remains and Lukic is at it again. Wolves are tamed.

2-0 wolves

There’s a lot of rotation for the CWC game. Gothenburg are a tough round one opponent but McCallum makes sure we’ve got a good chance over in Sweden.

3-0 gothenburg

Still unbeaten. It’s backs to the wall against Chelsea but we’re made of strong stuff and a hard earned point keeps us in the top 4.

0-0 chelsea S10

Man Utd are our next visitors. Their financial crisis has been eased by the sale of many players. Sadly, one of them is not Michael Owen. He scores what I make to be his third hat-trick against us. Boo and hiss.

3-0 man utd

We manage to blow a 3-0 lead in Sweden. Thankfully it’s just on the night and the aggregate score is not a problem. It’ll be Hajduk Split in the next round.

3-3 gothenburg

Sheff Utd are back. Woo. Iversen is still there and obviously he equalises because he feasts on the souls of young defenders who don’t know any better. McCallum puts him right. Things really are changing if we are winning at Bramall Lane.

1-2 sheff utd

We lead Aston Villa too but that soon goes wrong. Rojas is Bolivian and worth £11m. He’s far too good for us.

1-2 villa

More rotation for the Hajduk Split game. I’ve got youngsters to blood. Bert Calderwood, who has been called into the Scotland squad despite his relatively brief minutes this season, scores the only goal. It’ll be tight over in Croatia.

1-0 Hajduk

Our annual humping at Newcastle is here. They now have Ariel Ortega which seems a tad unfair. Mind you, they also have Kevin Lisbie. You’d think they would cancel each other out but here we are.

4-1 toon

All of that leaves us an honourable 7th. The league is really quite even now after 9 seasons so if you can win a couple of games in a row you become a contender. That’s been our problem in previous seasons though. Too many losses. Funny that.

top S10 November

To be honest it’s just nice not to be in the bottom 3. We have already failed to beat Newcastle, Hull, Chelsea and Fulham so that bodes well.

We’ll finish with a huge game. Southport in the League Cup. Bert, which you all know is the code word for danger, opens the scoring. McBride seals it and we’ll be in round 4 of the most pointless cup in the world.

2-0 southport

That sets us up nicely for the season ahead. Winning the Cup Winners Cup is nice, of course it is, but we need to keep progressing. The Champions League is probably out of the question but I’d like to finish in the top 6. The UEFA Cup will provide similar development powers and actually has an extra round. Maybe one day we’ll hear that famous Champions League music, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I’ll be back next Sunday with another instalment. In the meantime, here’s our graduate of the week.

Graduate of the week

Ryan Morrison is one of the more successful graduates. He once cost Blackburn £3.2m, where he played 10 times before leaving for Man Utd for half the price. From there he was farmed out to Leicester without ever playing for the Old Trafford outfit. Eventually he was sold back to Barnsley for £925k, who has signed him from us in the first place for £1.4m.

He has played in the Premier League for Barnsley but they have flittered between the top two divisions throughout this save and currently sit in Division 1. RyMo plays most of the time. He left the Academy when we were a Division 2 side having been part of the promotion winning team in the first season.
