The 2021 CM Cup – Day 7: First teams eliminated as Groups A and B play to a finish

It’s judgment day for Groups A and B! Both tables look almost symmetrical with two teams already in the last 16. Importantly, nobody is yet eliminated which means everything matters. EVERYTHING. Let’s get to it.

Group A

FPLHints vs hsoper404

Ash is already through but vowed to maintain the integrity of the Cup by playing his best team. That’s noble and no doubt appreciated by everybody except Harry.

More of the same from Harry who will be hoping for his Icelandic stalwart to carry them through.

Ash starts like a train, Chelsea duo Zola and Vialli make it 2-0 with goals on 15 and 17. Collymore departs with an injury and Ash throws on Nigel Pearson to steady the ship. However it causes panic and Gamarra is dismissed for a last man red card. Straight after half time Gudjohnsen and Maurice score in quick succession and all of a sudden the great escape is on for Harry. Ash throws everybody behind the ball.

Harry has to win but try as he might Ash has built a wall and despite Cois struggling to finish the game, Ash holds on for a point that ensures he tops the group and sends Harry home.

The stats swung wildly back in Harry’s favour as he pushed for a winner but just couldn’t find a winner.

Padalino is the unlikely man of the match winner. Who can say why he was so great?

Harry is out but Nathan and Andrew have a shootout for the second qualification spot.

FMCM_FC vs Footballacumen

Nathan has to win and he has rolled the dice to move to this formation. Any win will do.

Andrew is guaranteed at least third and therefore a shot at qualifying but a point will secure qualification. It’s the return of 2-3-1-2-2

Marcelo Salas, take a bow. A virtuoso display from the Chilean sees him score twice in the opening 13 minutes whilst Stimac departs injured for Andrew. The away team can’t really get a foothold in the game despite of the changes made and Salas completes his hat-trick towards the end. Nathan will advance, Andrew is left sweating.

A dominant display.

Only a 9 for Salas? That hardly seems fair.

There we have confirmation that Ash and Nathan are through, Andrew will be hoping that -3 doesn’t come back to haunt him.

Let’s see what Group B can bring.

Group B

NTR9798 vs DaveMathieson84

Nick has to win against an already qualified Dave, the classic formation is given another chance.

Dave plays that formation too, so we’ll see how this plays out.

A ridiculous game sees Teddy Lucic open the scoring only for the equally unlikely figure of Pessotto to equalise. Ricken gives Dave the lead but from kick off, it’s Vitor Baia who has a rush of blood and rushes out and catches Michael Owen. Reuser equalises from the spot to make it all square at the break. Graef restores Nick’s lead and Reuser makes it 4-2. Game over? Owen pulls one back. My goodness. Nilis scores in the 89th minute to seal a win with the last kick of the game and give Nick every chance of going through.

A thoroughly entertaining game with 38 shots between them.

Reuser gets man of the match for his double, Nigel Martyn didn’t disgrace himself from the bench.

Nick jumps up into second, Nikolai needs to win to guarantee qualification. Deano needs a four goal win for second or any win to go into the third place lottey.

9798Nikolai vs Emsonite

Nikolai knows what he wants and that is get the ball to Hubner and watch the goals happen. John Barnes is also there.

Deano has called for Vieri. This is serious.

It’s a really tight game, unlike many we’ve seen. The longer the clock ticks the less likely it is Deano will win heavily. Both teams need the win and Richard Gough is sent off, to make Deano’s chances very slim. 0-0 would be reasonable outside of the context of the group but Hubner scores 7 minutes from time to secure second, eliminate Deano and leave Nick hoping for the results to go his way elsewhere.

Nikolai just about deserved it on the stats.

Deano’s keeper takes man of the match but it doesn’t look like there was loads of quality anywhere.

Confirmation of the group as Dave and Nikolai advance. Another goal for Nikolai would have put him top of the pile!

So we say thank you and goodbye to Harry and Deano whilst Nick and Andrew join the third place qualifiers table, where the top 4 of 6 will qualify. More fun tomorrow?
