Father’s Day: 10 players in CM9798 who have footballing sons

Happy Father’s Day! It’s actually my first Father’s day and so to celebrate, I’m dusting off an old favourite and bringing you a list article. Not only that, it’s relevant! Here are 10 players in CM9798 who have son’s who are really good at football. This isn’t an exhaustive list, there are more than 10 footballers who have footballing children, just to be clear on that. Devante Cole was so close to making the cut. Anyway, on we go.

A special mention to a few others who didn’t make it. Paolo Maldini’s son was always up against it given his footballing heritage whilst who knew Jurgen Klinsmann’s son was a goalkeeper in the Swiss league? Alex Bruce has thankfully retired.

There’s only one place to start…

Peter Schmeichel (Kasper Schmeichel)

Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel is a 90s icon. Not only did he do a great advert for Danish bacon (Youtube) he was also the name of the dog in Coronation Street. Sadly he also spent the 90s winning trophies for Man Utd and denying the mighty Magpies at every opportunity, except one wonderful afternoon in October 1996. In 9798 he’s part of the practically impenetrable Man Utd defensive unit and lasts for a season or two before moving on to retirement. His son Kasper is the current Leicester City number one and in 2016 they became the first father-son duo to win the Premier League. He is named after a friendly ghost.

Lillian Thuram (Marcus Thuram)

Thuram

Whilst Lillian Thuram is a world cup winning defender, his son Marcus is a striker with huge potential. Seeing as we all watched the Bundesliga for 4 weeks, you’ve probably seen Thuram tearing it up for Borussia Mönchengladbach as they look to get into the Champions League. The Thuram genes are so strong Lillian’s second child Khephren plays for Nice and has represented France at youth level – he’s only 19, so what odds both Thuram boys win the World Cup in years to come?

Danny Blind (Daley Blind)

Blind

Danny Blind had an incredible career and won the lot, including the Champions League with Ajax. He had a less successful management career. Meanwhile, son Daley is having a good go at replicating that, leaving Amsterdam behind for the bright lights of…Manchester. That didn’t really work out so he went back to Ajax where he continues to operate in defence like his Dad, though he can play in midfield.

Mark Chamberlain (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain)

Chambo

Mark Chamberlain came back into prominence with his recent appearance on Harry’s Heroes, where he spent several weeks pulling various muscles on his ageing body. In 9798, Chamberlain is available for free in the winter of his career but he actually has two footballing sons. Best known will be England International Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, about to win the Premier League with Liverpool. His brother Christian currently plays for Notts County in the National League.

Enrico Chiesa (Federico Chiesa)

Chiesa

Enrico Chiesa is absolutely magnificent in CM9798, just look at those stats. He’s part of the awesome Parma team and would go on to play for Fiorentina and went to Euro 96 and World Cup 98 with Italy. Son Federico is only 22 but already has 17 caps for Italy. He’s currently at Fiorentina but is being linked with big money moves already…

Gheorghe Hagi (Ianis Hagi)

Hagi

What can I say about Gheorghe Hagi? He was so good he played for Real Madrid and Barcelona and got 124 caps for Romania. In CM9798, he’s still useful but you’ll only get a season or two out of him. His son Ianis was born in Turkey (whilst Hagi was at Galatasaray) but plays for Romania. He’s only 21 but has 10 caps already and has recently made his loan move to Rangers permanent. It’s not quite Barcelona and Real Madrid but time is on his side.

Diego Simeone (Giovanni Simeone)

Simeone

Ah Diego Simeone. A man synonymous with 1998 has gone on to be one of the great coaches of the modern game, taking Atletico to La Liga and Europa League glory as well as two Champions League finals. But whilst he was a tough tackling midfielder, son Giovanni is a striker for Fiorentina (currently on loan at Cagliari). He has 5 caps in pursuit of his Dad’s tally of 106. Younger brother Gianluca is also a professional footballer, making his way in Argentina.

Bebeto (Mattheus Oliveira)

Bebeto

The pictorial star of this article is Bebeto. In CM9798, Bebeto is in the twilight of his career and yes, that goal tally is incorrect. Anyway, if you want to feel old, the baby in the famous cradle rocking celebration of 1994 now plays for Sporting in Portugal, aged 25. He did play for Brazil at youth level but there is considerable work to be done if he’s to emulate the 75 caps his Father collected.

Bryan Gunn (Angus Gunn)

Gunn

Bryan Gunn was a great goalkeeper and then latterly a terrible manager. He is a Norwich City legend (as a player) and is plying his trade in Scotland at Hibs in CM9798, though he will be at Norwich if you’re playing the out of the box version. His son Angus has shown great promise, coming through the youth academy at Manchester City before excelling on loan at Norwich. That earned him a move to Southampton, where he was a regular until he unfortunately conceded 9 (not really his fault) and he was wisely taken out of the firing line. He’s represented England to under 21 level though Scotland have tried to poach him. Angus said no.

Eidur Gudjohnsen (Andri Guðjohnsen)

Gudj

We finish with Eidur Gudjohnsen. What we love about Eidur is that he’s the answer to pretty much every quiz question having played for so many big sides in his lengthy career includding 88 times for Iceland. In CM9798, he’s just a young man with it all ahead of him. Anyway, everybody in this family tree is talented. Eidur’s three sons are already on the football ladder. The youngest, Daniel (12), is on Real Madrid’s books. Middle son Andri is also at Real Madrid, he’s 18 and working under Raul, so that bodes well. Also, he was born in England so let’s poach him. Eldest son Sveinn is currently playing in Italy.

To top it all off though, Eidur’s Dad is Arnor Gudjohnsen – the most famous regen of them all. We’ve often wondered why he’s such a great player in CM9798 but what we do know is that he’s a genetic jackhammer.

Arnor

Happy Father’s Day one and all, I hope your kids all turn out to be as good as Arnor Gudjohnsen’s regen.
