Bom Dia! and welcome to the penultimate episode with Nick and his Portuguese Wolves, who are doing well in pretty much every competition apart from the league. They’ve already secured the World Club Cup, but can they now add the European Super Cup to the cabinet? Here’s Nick…
This is how the table is looking. We were 2nd not so long ago, but after just two wins from our last eight games, we’ve slid all the way down to 7th. The optimist in me says that it’s only the halfway point, so let’s hope better things lie ahead for us this week. Let’s go…

We begin with the first leg of the European Super Cup final with Lyon. Again, there’s not a grey to be seen in their squad, and most look like regens, but I do recognise Cedric Barbosa and Adil Ramzi. Let’s see what they’re made of.

Lyon are much the better side for most of the match, but we come from behind to level twice, and it’s looking like a Desmond until Futre nets with 6 minutes to go and then they have a late equaliser disallowed, thank Christ.

Looking at those stats, I’d say we should be thanking our lucky stars…

For once, we follow up a European victory with one in the league straight afterwards, as The Boa and Amaral take care of Huddersfield before half time. Vitinha decides to be an idiot with ten minutes to go, but a win’s a win…

We’re set for extra time at the Owl Sanctuary until the most extraordinary ending plays out, as they look to have won it with 7 minutes left, only for it to be ruled out and then for Coelho to score the winner with the very last kick…

Our reward is a semi-final with 2nd division Crewe, who made light work of Blackburn, who are now in the 3rd division, winning 5-0.

And then the man with the golden boot gets injured. Just f*cking great…

Seventeenth-placed Bolton are next, and I’ve literally got no words for this display apart from yes, that definitely is Michael Owen…

To our last shot at winning the FA Cup, and I had a feeling a win at Elland Road would be too much to ask, and sure enough, Leeds ensure that we won’t be winning the lot…

I struggle to scrape a side together for the 2nd leg with Lyon, as we take another pasting and defend for our lives for pretty much the entire match, hardly threatening their goal. But we manage to hold on to win on away goals and tick the European Super Cup off the list. Phew.

That’s the last trophy that we haven’t yet won in the bag. Anything else from now on will just make us serial winners…

Ok, this really is getting embarrassing now…

Then out of nowhere comes a comfortable win over Arsenal, who we’ve not beaten in our last four meetings, and a first clean sheet in five games. See what I mean about inconsistency?

We get through the first leg of our League Cup semi-final with Crewe, but our dominance deserves so much more, and their away goal gives them more than a sniff in the 2nd leg…

There are no other games during the ten days before the second leg, and this time we put them to bed, as Coelho scores on his return from injury to help book our spot in the final…

It’ll be Arsenal at Wembley, after they scraped past Birmingham 3-2 in the other semi…

Next stop is Old Trafford, where after going behind early, we’re back in it for all of two minutes as Jurgen Klinsmann’s regen gets a hat trick to see us leave with nothing again…

I had hoped that this would have happened earlier in the season, but hopefully he’ll play…

It’s a thoroughly dominant display at home to Everton, but we’re made to wait for the win, as Secretario holds his nerve with a late pen, and assists an even later second goal for Coelho…

To the Bernebeu we go then. We’re 2-1 up and playing well, but cometh the hour and it’s like a switch has been flicked and suddenly they’re all over us and end up winning 3-2. F*ck off…

Fulham send us back to losing ways in the league as our equaliser to make it 1-1 is ruled out, and then they’re 2-0 up by the time we score one that actually does count…

We fire a blank at home to our old chums Coventry in front of a record crowd (why on earth did they bother?), as a bad day is made worse as we lose Boa Morte for a month…

We need a big performance in the second leg with Real, but going behind after 3 minutes really doesn’t help. However, Dani, whose European form has been great compared to his league, equalises, and it’s level at half time.
We’re the better side in the second half, but Landreau foils us over and over again, until Gomes swings things in our favour with 20 minutes to go. I’m expecting a sting in the tail, but it never comes, and Amaral’s two away goals at The Bernebeu help to send us through!

A reunion with Juventus in the semis awaits…

My thoughts exactly, Gary…
The less said about our league form, the better. Again we have games in hand on all the teams above us due to our European involvement, but our form is so up and down that I just can’t be sure where the points are going to come from, so Lord knows where we’ll end up.

So that brings this week to a close, and we enter the home straight of this adventure. Join me next week for the final instalment, where as well as trying to salvage something from the league season, we’ll have the chance to add a further two trophies to the cabinet, and go out with a massive bang. See you then. Adeus!
