Three Lions – The Groups | @FMCM_FC

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Three Lions blog. In the last episode we warmed up nicely for the World Cup with some impressive friendly fixtures. we move on to the serious stuff now as we head to France for the FIFA World Cup.

It’s a great start for South Africa who manage to hold the holders Brazil to a draw. A draw in the other game leaves group A wide open.

2 goals from Djorkaeff give the hosts a perfect start against the USA and the other two drawing is a big plus.

Wins for Russia and Sweden put them in control of Group C as Croatia and Mexico cancel each other out.

Valderrama gives Columbia a big win to take the lead in Group D. Belgium with the biggest win so far and the draw in the other game goes in their favour as well.

We come to England’s first game and it’s against Italy who are the best team in our group and the team that stopped us qualifying automatically. Here is how we line up.

Here we go then with our World Cup opener.

Oh, what a way to start!!! Ian Wright was an absolute monster in this one. He gives us the lead after 10 minutes with a clever shimmy and a placed shot past Peruzzi. He then doubles the lead with a thunderous shot from 25 yards! We then have a third goal disallowed for an infringement. In the second half Del Piero gets one back before Tony Adams powers a header home from Beckham’s corner. Dino Baggio drags Italy back into it but Wright completes his Hattrick to seal a famous win and 3 valuable points!! The country is in absolute pandemonium! The streets are packed until the early hours of fans singing “Three Lions”!!

A great start for Spain also and our win is further added to by Morocco and Australia drawing.

A fantastic win for Eire here to get their campaign off to a flyer. Holland and Norway picking up strong wins in Group G.

Back to group A and Brazil take a commanding win against Japan, Saudi Arabia pick up a crucial win as well.

The hosts drop points here but the USA get a big win to get back into contention for qualifying.

Russia and Sweden move to 4 points apiece as Yugoslavia and Jamaica get their first points of the tournament.

Colombia become the first team to qualify for the knockout stages with 2 wins from 2. Mexico are on 2 points and Croatia and Cameroon have a point a piece.

In Group E Germany and Belgium move to 4 points. Portugal on 2 and Tunisia look like their race is run with no points. In England’s group Italy drawing means we can qualify with a game to spare with a win in our next game.

We play Australia next to see if we can qualify with a game in hand. I name an unchanged side that beat Italy.

It wasn’t pretty but we get the result and qualify for the knockout stages. We take the lead 10 minutes in when Moore brings down Wright in the penalty area. Wright brushes himself down and converts the penalty with no problems. We ride our luck a bit throughout the rest of the game. Australia have a few scrambles in our box but we stand tall. Our best chances come from corners but we fail to convert any. We are through though and that is all that matters!

Eire are having the tournament of a life time here. They beat Argentina to qualify for the knockout round as well and knock Argentina out!! Spain’s win sees them through and Chile out.

The top two play out an entertaining draw here which allows Nigeria to win and get to within a point of them both.

Brazil win to wrap up Group A and Saudi Arabi claim 2nd place. The hosts take top spot in Group B and the US despite a slow start take second.

Russia and Sweden have been so consistent throughout and both qualify with Sweden in 1st thanks to their big win here. Colombia already through win the group and Croatia sneak in with a win against Cameroon.

Germany of course top their group and by beating Belgium they allow Portugal to slide into second with their win. Group F was already done with Spain’s win giving them top spot. Massive shout out to Eire for getting out of that group of death and dumping Argentina out.

We come to our final group game 4 points ahead at the top of the group so I rest everyone.

We finish the group with a draw against Morocco. We are poor in front of goal in the first half and Morocco capitalise when Southgate sells Richard Wright short and Chaouch nips in to score. I bring on Ian Wright at half time and it takes him 15 mins to slip through and equalise. Both teams have chances for a winner but neither find a way through.

Holland and Norway get their second wins and go through. Holland in pole position. Amazingly Italy can only draw with Australia which means Morocco’s draw sees them take second and Italy are out!!

So that’s the groups done. I will leave you with the draw for the last 16. I got a bit click happy and missed the full list so I will detail it below.

Brazil vs Morocco – finishing 1st in our group has made us avoid Brazil!

France vs Norway – the hosts have a tough draw here.

Colombia vs Portugal – Tough one to call. Colombia just as they were great in the groups.

Sweden vs Eire – Sweden were fantastic but Eire had some amazing results.

Germany vs Croatia – Germany to win this one all day long.

Spain vs Russia – 2 of the best teams from the groups. Spain to edge it.

England vs Saudi Arabia – We beat Saudi in the warm ups so I’m hoping for a similar result this time.

Holland vs USA – Holland were strong in the groups and should have enough to see off a good USA team

That’s it for this update. Join me next time for the round of 16 and Quarter Finals.
