AFC United – Part 19: Penalty Woes | @Matt_C_Wills

The summer is hurtling along, Euro2020(21) is fading, I’ve just finished 2 weeks of annual leave and the new season is upon us….now where was I?

Oh yes, AFC United – a band of ex-Man Utd players being the best that they can be.

As a very quick recap, we stormed to the Premier League in 3 seasons, fired by the goals of David Brown and Erik Nevland, taking 1st place in each season, and then we did the unthinkable and won the Premiership in our maiden season. We fell to 5th in the following season but recovered last season to pip Villa to the title.

In the cups, we were runners up in the League Cup in Season 2, but won the FA Cup in Season 3 as we gunned through Division 1. This took us into the CWC which we won in Season 4

Last season, we pipped Villa to the league title, but lost to them in the FA Cup Final, only to prevail in the Uefa Cup final to pick up our second european title in just six seasons.

Faithful stalwart, Alan Tonge, has hung up his boots with a clutch of winners medals and a special place in or hearts, so we head into Season 7 with high hopes having snagged a long term target…

Edwin will give Bosnich competition for the goalie shirt, but I’ll have to consider that pesky Work Permit clause….

The season kicks off against last seasons rivals, Villa, in the Charity Shield.

Big Ed keeps a clean sheet on his debut, but there were plenty of cards flying about

Erik takes his good form into the first league game, that’s 4 in 2 for the Norwegian

Danny Hall is Mr Reliable at the back, but he can’t avoid this reverse against Everton. An hour against 10 men and still no way through. Maybe I was wrong to let Berg go?

It’s a bit better away to Wolves, but this isn’t the best of title defenses really….

I’m not sure who told Nevland he’s the only one to score, but it would be good to spread it around a bit…

Ed VDS shows his penalty saving prowess hasn’t deserted him. Note Villa had Graham Kavanagh up front in the Charity Shield, now they have Raul….

Well, I’ve had worse group draws I suppose

Talking of draws. Twice we throw away a lead, but it’s the first time this season someone other than Nevland has scored. Talks of being a one man team are a bit premature…

First time I’ve probably been thankful of B.O.

Owen has started to share the goalscoring burden, but I decide to add some firepower to the ranks just in case….

It seems to be a wise choice

Whilst Edwin likes stopping penalties, Erik can’t seem to score them. Sammy Kuffour would have been beating the ground if that one had gone in….

Basically, we were crap in this match. Moving on….

This was better

And so was this,

Taken a long time for David Brown to score his first of the season though. He needs to rise to the added competition of Owen and Yorke

Some of those Yugoslavian names seem familiar….We almost suffer a late collapse after Veron sees red, but we hold on for 3 pts in the sort of game we need to win to progress

Danny Hall makes it to 300 games for the Reds. The most consistent performer since Denis Irwin. Look at all those assists in Season 1!

Startling that he hasn’t received an England cap though, Steve Bruce must know just how he feels

We seem to like score draws lately. Probably the first save in over 20 years where Kluivert seems to score regularly

I really need to take Nevland off pens, that’s 3 he’s missed already this season

Make that 4. Bloody hell.

We’d be almost through if Nevland had put those pens away.

Penalties, I still shudder at the thought.

Our season seems to be going well. I started up a recent save for fun with Hibernian and Kevin Harper is quite the gem, so no surprise to see him scoring.

Looks like a long season ahead for us with a 12 point gap to make up. Hall and Duncan are preforming well in defence, we just keep seem to be conceding loads. Maybe I was too quick to ditch Bozzy….?

Well, it feels like we’re slowly defrosting from the summer break, it’s not looking good for a title defense, but please join me next week to see if our cup form is any brighter and whether David Brown has run out of steam or not
