Basque Boys Deux – Part 21: A King is reborn | @NTR9798

Bonjour! Last season was looking promising at the halfway point, but ultimately ended in disappointment once again, although we did finish second, so have the prospect of Champions League football to look forward to this season. We’re getting closer, I can smell it.

We’ve been playing for a decade now, and the game is flooded with regens, so a cash injection isn’t the huge news it might have been a few years ago, but it’s still welcome…

The sale of Tomas further adds to the balance. We’re not short of forwards, so I’m happy to let him go…

Revilla was one of my first signings, and was brilliant, but he didn’t play a single minute last season, so I do the kind thing and release him to find some game time. Thanks, Borj!

As for incomings here’s a stalwart of the original series, Imanol Etxeberria. So good they named him twice? Let’s hope so…

We’re living life in the Dulce Vita. Here’s Gorka Bidaurrazaga II…

Another Basque beast is reborn. Welcome Roberto Rios under his new guise…

And here is the king of all Basque Boys – Julen Guerrero! This man brought me so much joy in the original series, so let’s hope his regen can make me just as happy…

It seems The Board are getting as impatient for a first trophy as I am…

Everything comes up Mulhouse in the League Cup draw…

And I couldn’t have asked for much more than this to qualify for the Champions League…

Here’s the squad, all but four of them are regens now. I’d like to trim it by a couple more yet, but all in good time…

That formation I chose for the first half of last season was great, but then just completely fell apart after the winter break, so I’ve decided to revert back to what I know. Let’s f*cking go…

We start in Europe, where National are swept aside with ease, even without Badi and Calle…

The league campaign gets off to a strong start with a win at Monaco, who have ten men for the most part…

Lens are also easily taken care of…

The second leg with National isn’t quite as emphatic, but we’re through nonetheless…

I decide to move Santi on. His ratings were always in the sixes, so he’ll go down as a flop unfortunately…

As groups go, this will do nicely…

The Board are merely satisfied with me, but the French FA clearly think more of me…

We dominate Bordeaux, but come away empty handed yet again. I wish Johan Cruyff would just f*ck off now…

An early red card for Lyon puts them on the back foot, and we take full advantage…

With Portugal being a loaded league, I expect a tough game against Porto, but it turns out to be quite the opposite (Omarsson is everyone’s favourite Icelandic regen)…

As is so often the case when we’re on form, we’re brought back down to earth with a bump. In fairness, Nice are top of the league…

There are no signs of a bounce back against 12th-place Lorient, and we’re lucky not to lose after they have a goal disallowed…

We might be spluttering in the league, but our fine European form continues with a standard victory…

Meanwhile, in domestic matters, a Desmond at Nimes makes it no wins in three…

Spirits are lifted again in the Cup, with a thumping of Mulhouse…

Oh joy…

We’re 4-1 up on Le Havre, who turn into prime Barcelona for the last 20 minutes, but here’s no comeback this time. F*ck you, you c*nts!

As soon as I saw that France had sacked their manager, this was what I was hoping for, and it could be very good news for us…

A trouncing of Hajduk Split ensures that we finish the first half of champions league group games with maximum points…

And then predictably, one of our favourite teams remind us that things still aren’t going great in the league…

You can f*ck right off…

We’re back on track with a fine win against high-flying Lille, which shows what we’re capable of on our day…

Despite our inconsistency, Babs, Mateo, and Diaz all earn national call-ups…

Our first European loss comes as Porto get revenge for the hammering we gave them at their place…

Bordeaux turn to a Hibs legend after I rejected them…

You absolute Bastiards…

Bordeaux knock us out of the League Cup, which is a surprise to absolutely no one…

A Desmond with Marseille will do…

Things aren’t so easy against Standard this time around, but a point is better than nowt…

Our form is like a box of chocolates, you don’t know what you’re gonna get…

We cruise at Guingamp. Basil Fawlty won’t be happy that we’ve injured his wife though…

A draw against Hajduk is enough to send us through to the Champions League quarter finals…

Oh how I’d like to see this with the league table…

It’s Dortmund, which looks like one of the more favourable draws if I’m honest…

Rennes are the latest team to nick a draw…

At least it’s not Bordeaux I suppose…

Montpellier go back to being annoying again…

Last up this week are Caen, and it’s nice to get one over on them after they’ve frustrated us in the past…

Badi’s injury proneness stat of 19 really is beginning to cause us some problems…

It’s fifth at the halfway point, which I’m not really surprised at given the amount of points we’ve dropped from winning positions, but I guess that’s always a risk with the 2-3-1-2-2. I’m eating my words for celebrating Johan Cruyff leaving Bordeaux, who are unbeaten…

So that’s another week wrapped up. I don’t hold much hope for the league seeing that we’ve already used up our quota of draws and losses for the season, but we’re into the quarter finals of the champions league, and remember that my Wolves side couldn’t win the league for love nor money, but still won the European crown twice, so there’s hope for us yet. See you next week. Au Revoir!
