Where Eagles Dare – Part 3: Signs of Life

Bonjour and welcome back to this multi club mayhem. I’m managing three sides, each one more eagled related than the last, with the sole aim of having two of them meet in the Champions League final some day.

That day will not be soon but progress is very reasonable in some places. Erik Tammer is my hero so far, 25 in 21 in the Dutch second tier is a more than fitting return (even though as a league, and in fact as a country, the percentage of goalkeepers with working arms is alarmingly low)

It’s the winter months and the Go Ahead Eagles will enjoy a break from December 20th to January 31st, but that is 5 games away. Nice and Palace will have no break.

For all I’m pleased with the achievements of Go Ahead Eagles, the biggest surprise have been Palace. On current form we’ll be nowhere near a relegation fight, with this win at West Ham lifting us to 6th.

Meanwhile there’s another four goals for Tam Tam Bigelow.

Nice even win 4-0 to complete the most successful weekend of my adult life. Up to 10th but we need to really get into a run of form now if we’re going to bridge a 7 point gap.

This guy is dreadful but St Etienne are keen to pay me £1m for him.

Logically, I should buy a striker but the boys we have sometimes do alright. I mean granted, three of the four scorers here are regulars in Division 3, Ligue 2 is of a higher standard than that…but how much higher?

An irritating draw, made worse by it having to be played on a Wednesday. I’m not sure why it can’t just be the Sunday (Wimbledon share a ground with us and play Saturday) but there must be some reason.

The King has returned. It takes him 55 minutes to make his mark as Nice continue to show signs of promise.

All that good work is thrown away with a Tony Cascarino fuelled loss at home to 10 men. A proper balloon bursting but a reminder that we’re still not that good.

Tam Tam Bigelow is going to be vital to our promotion push. He nearly left in the early weeks of this save but miraculously offered to stay and I’m very glad he did. 35 in 25 now.

The last game before the break is a disaster. Despite two minutes of things looking up, we concede almost every shot we face. It’s a problem.

Still, we’re in the playoffs as it stands with a long way to go when we come back after a month or so off.

Palace have been in a bit of a rut but this win over Leeds reignites our hopes of an unlikely push for a European spot.

Some painful defeats in there.

Well, well. Look who came in on his penny farthing for another shot at the big time. He hasn’t been interested all season but now we’ve shown our worth, he’s like a rat up a drainpipe.

The Nice recovery continues with a blitzing first half.

There will be no cup run for Palace. It doesn’t really matter, this season.

It’s deadline day in Holland and amazingly, this unused Belgian has agreed to go on loan to the Eagles. It’s our first inter-club transaction and won’t solve the problem that we concede about 3 a game but I don’t suppose that issue is going to disappear overnight anyway.

I’ve moved to secure yet more youth talent for Palace. Wicks is usually a fair bet and Splinter has struggled alongside young Robert Quinn, who has been excellent.

It does not have the desired effect.

Nice though continue to show signs of being a real threat. After a defeat at 3rd place Caen, we bounce back with a win at 4th placed Laval.

Best result for a while for Palace too, thrashing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Vialli will no doubt have enjoyed it despite not getting on the scoresheet.

A typically quiet game for Nice but a 6-3 win. Up to 6th in the table too. Promising…

10 goals in a week! To coin a phrase: Nice!

The biggest game comes against 3rd place Lille, where good turned to bad but Monsieur Micker climbs off the bench to snatch a crucial point.

Let’s leave it there for another week. Things are quite nicely poised in France – I mean that title race is something else for starters. 8 points for us to make up is a tall order, but there are 15 games to go due to the 22 team league we are in. We have a lot of momentum, our form since Bjorn signed and then ultimately returned to fitness has been superb.

This is the squad. McVeigh has been the biggest surprise but my decision to sign a bunch of English free transfers who I tried to get to work for Torquay’s FA Cup campaign, well maybe we’re overperforming.

Meanwhile in Holland, we look destined for the playoffs. 12 points off that automatic promotion spot and 9 points in the good zone. If only we could stop conceding so many goals…

The squad is top heavy, as backed up by our goals scored column. I don’t know how I’ll address the defensive issues but Radostin Kishishev probably isn’t the answer.

Finally in England, Palace sit 7th with a couple of games in hand on 6th. We have a fair chance of getting into the European places but we’ll need to up our consistency.

We have one squad space available but nobody is that keen to move to Palace, so I will probably keep my powder dry unless a great deal becomes available.

BeefCo should be pleased. The early signs are that we’ve got all three clubs going in the right direction but there’s an awful long way to go yet before we can get excited. Two promotions and a top 6 finish is a lot to ask but that’s the aim of the game. See you next week to see what we can achieve!
