Happy Tuesday! Here’s Nathan with more from Naples and the legend that is Diego Maradona…
Hello and welcome back to Naples where Legend Diego Maradona has returned as a fresh faced 22 year old to try and help Napoli back to the top of Italian football. In the last update we saw flashes of his brilliance as Napoli started to win a few games and get on a bit of a run. Let’s re join the action
Really frustrating game to open this session. We have the ball in the net thanks to Diego but the ref rules it out for an infringement that doesn’t exist. Diego decides if he is going to be reprimanded it’ll be for something worthy and chops Otero in half and escapes with a yellow. A ball over the top sees Luiso away and clear to slot past Meier for the opener. We take the game to them though and Beto plays a ball through for Bellucci to run onto and laser past Mondini, who was fantastic in this game. With 10 minutes to go we lose Luiso again and he scores the winner. Diego is not a happy man and has to be steered away from the referee.
Vicenza can do one!! They beat us again, this time in the cup, just 3 days after beating us in the league. All 3 of their goals where from deflected shots. Facci got our goal from a well placed corner from Asanovic. Maradona had a very quiet game.
Pathetic result this. Buonocore inexplicably handballs in the box and gets away with a warning. Cyprien steps up and slots the resulting penalty home. Protti was woeful so he came off and we pushed Diego upfront. A corner got whipped in and Crasson was at the back post to flick in our leveller. It stays level for 2 minutes before Leece go back in front thanks to their captain.
I decide to move Maradona back up front and bring in Imbriani to replace Protti and it works a treat. Beto was rampant in the first half with 2 assists for Maradona then Bellucci. Blomberg then smashes a header in off the post from a corner. Ventola then grabs one back straight from kickoff. In the second half we don’t relent as Beto gets a deserved goal and Bellucci grabs 2 more to take home the match ball.
We are having a bit of a mare and Centre Back at the moment. Jorge is out for another month, then Facci got injured for 2 weeks and now Baldini is suspended! It was a straight red to be fair but still doesn’t help. Goals from the front two thanks to two assists from Imbriani in the second half give us the 3 points.
As much as this is a great result away from home against top of the table it’s really frustrating as we had the lead until the 82nd minute. Asanovic opens the scoring by following in his own corner which was only half cleared. Just before half time Ba plays a killer through ball for Weah to run on to and tuck past Meier. Bellucci gives us the lead again toe poking past Rossi. We lose another Centre Back to injury then his replacement gives away a penalty just 2 minutes after coming on. Weah gets his second from the spot and we have to settle for a point.
Another good result for us here. Bellucci gets us off to a flying start curling a lovely shot into the bottom corner. Imbriani drifts out wide and plays a deep cross which looks overhit until D’Alessio comes steaming in to tap it in at the back post. Maradona puts the cherry on top after Blomberg flicks a corner on for Maradona to side foot into the net.
Another game. Another win. Another bloody Centre Back getting injured!!! i’ve never known anything like it! We are poor in the first half and don’t take our chances. In the second half we fix that as Beto gets 2 goals from his own assists. The first he plays in Bellucci who hits the post and Beto pings home the rebound. The second is a carbon copy except it’s Maradona hitting the post this time. The game remembers late on that they haven’t injured my Centre Backs so of course Blomberg goes down with just 3 mins remaining.
That’s it for this update. Let’s have a look at the league table.
We’ve moved up the table into the top 6 which is great going. We had a shaky start to this update but after moving Maradona back up front we didn’t lose a game so we will stick with that. Join me next time to see if we can get further up the table and see if Maradona can turn on the magic again.
