Stuttgarter Kickers: Road to Tokyo – Part 9 | @Winkveron

Happy hump day! Here’s Dan with more from the Kickers…

We broke for winter 11 points behind 1860, having played two games more. Now, in early March, a huge home win over the leaders cuts the gap to just five points.

We beat Rapid Vienna 4-2 on aggregate.

Bordeaux await.

We win the next two in the league….

….and there is a goalless draw in the Munich derby. Just four points separate the top three teams.

A crucial away goal in France and we put one foot into the final.

Another league win. A late goal against ten men is real title-winning stuff.

Now three points separate the top three, with six games to go.

It’s not the most entertaining game, but it doesn’t matter. We’re through to the UEFA Cup final!

Despite being 2-0 up after 27 minutes we suffer a crushing blow in a big game.

It doesn’t rain but it pours. We lose the UEFA Cup final in front of almost 120,000 at the Camp Nou.

With two games to go we’ve got an outside chance of second but we need six points and for other results to go our way.

We win the first one to go third.

If we win and Bayern lose we take second.

We keep to our end of the bargain…

…but Bayern draw.

Had it not been for the awful start we would’ve been champions. Still, I’m proud of how far this team has come. UEFA Cup final and third in the Bundesliga is success considering where we started five years ago.

No excuses next year!
