A Cock and Red Bull Story – Part 10: Sweet sixteen

Hallo meine Freunde! and welcome back to Leipzig. Season three is well underway for Nick and his promotion-chasing RB side, but their form has been patchy of late, so will things improve for them this week?

Here’s the current table. We ended last week’s episode with a win, so hopefully we can build on that this week, and put a good run together.

When I said “good run” I was thinking of wins, but at least a draw isn’t a loss. I’d forgotten how many red cards the 2-3-1-2-2 yields, and Soares is dismissed shortly before the Iceman salvages us a point against Greuther Fürth.

This is a blow, he’s been playing well in the short time we’ve had him…

With Gudnason on international duty, we give the Kickers a good kicking. Micker Jr comes in and takes his chance, and a special mention goes to man of the match Ziegner at right back, who worked his socks off to earn a 10/10.

The iceman also misses our next game, but Micker Jr fills in nicely again, this time with a brace as we give the Frankfurters a good grilling. Two wins in a row, I’m getting excited!

We ride our luck in Cologne, but the main man comes back into the team and picks up where he left off, netting the winner as we battle back from 1-0 down to avenge the cup defeat.

We make it four wins in a row by giving Dynamo Dresden six of the best, with three of our front four contributing to the rout. I don’t want to speak too soon, but I think we might be hitting some of that stuff they call “form”.

All four of those wins were in November, which earns me the manager of the month award, which I don’t really care about, I just like winning.

Wedau (Brehme) and Foda (Matthäus) agree new deals without big club release clauses, which I’m frankly over the moon with.

The iceman hits a double in a routine win away at Mainz. We should have scored more, but I have to credit my defence, who didn’t let the hosts have a single shot at goal.

Wuttke joins Uerdingen on transfer deadline day, but there are no other sales or arrivals.

Nat King Goal has had the whole winter break to get injured, but chooses to do it a week before our first game back. Fantastic.

It’s level at half time against Wattenscheid so I give the boys a Stern talking to, which does the trick as a second goal for Micker Jr, and a late iceman strike keep our winning run going.

It’s all happening at Zwickau. We’re behind and their keeper is sent off, but the sub saves the penalty. Bäumer levels and after another goal each it’s looking like a Desmond, but Micker Jr wins it late. Jason can still get Bent.

Ziegner kicks Billy Mac in the shoulder in training, and the pair of them end up injured, nice one boys…

Micker Jr goals are becoming as regular as Billy Mac injuries these days, and he gets the only goal of the game as we battle past Wolfsburg to make it eight wins in a row.

Oh dear, Odé…

Düsseldorf score in the first and last minute to end our winning run. It’s looking like Micker Jr has got another late winner, but the hosts are deserving of their point to be fair.

There’s Pamic on the streets of Leipzig after 9 minutes against Rostock, but we come from behind twice to win, as Lieftink atones for his own goal last week, and Mencel strikes with just three minutes left to snatch the points.

Ernie also scores on his Poland debut during the international break. He’s proving to be a bit of a baller, and his value is rapidly rising. I paid just £16k for him and he’s now worth £3.3m and he’s only played 9 games! I fear it won’t be long until the vultures start circling…

Derby time. Duncan returns from suspension, only to be sent off again, and were we not playing the bottom team in the league, the red card might have had more of an impact, but we more than cope with ten men.

This doesn’t surprise me. He’s been back in the side after I had to drop Petkovic with Mencel playing so well, but the game time has gone to his head…

Leónidas must be trying to put himself in the shop window, but being listed for loan, he won’t be leaving. The Thai-phoon adds his nineteenth and twentieth goals of the season against Fortuna, and the points are ours.

Maybe he’s trying too hard to impress…

Mencel switches to the left in Leónidas’ absence, but it doesn’t matter because “he plays on the left, he plays on the right, that boy Mencel, makes St. Pauli look shite”.

Our unbeaten run of sixteen games comes to an end at home to Uerdingen, who have ten men for almost the whole match, so it’s disappointing, but I can’t complain at all.

All I can say is wow! We didn’t get off to the best of starts, but it looks like things have clicked, and that incredible run has seen us climb from sixth place to six points clear at the top! As expected, we’re by far the top scorers, and our goals conceded could be better, but it’s never dull with the 2-3-1-2-2.

Join me next week for the conclusion of the season. We require seven points from our remaining five games to secure an immediate return to the Bundesliga, surely we can’t mess this up now, or can we? Tschüss!
