A Legend Returns – Part 7: A New Star Rises | @FMCM_FC

What comes after Blue Monday? The answer is Nathan Tuesday, or at least on this website it is. It’s back to Naples now to see if Maradona is still waving his magic wand as he takes his side up Serie A

Hello everyone and welcome back. In the last update we started season 2 with Diego back in Naples and we made a good start in the league. Unfortunately we got battered in the UEFA Cup in just the 3rd round to a Christian Vieri inspired Atletico Madrid. We have the second leg in Madrid to come but that is just a formality. We also got dumped out of the Coppa Italia by Bologna who we beat in the league (go figure!). So we will have another distraction free crack at the league title. Let’s see how we do in this update.

So that is the UEFA Cup run officially over. We play really well which is so annoying as we were terrible at home! Maradona gives us the lead with a well struck first time shot after Imbriani rattled the crossbar. Bellucci then makes it 2-0 just before half time when Maradona flicks a ball through a defenders legs to send Bellucci clear who slots it home with ease. We have two really good second half chances but Molina manages to scramble them away and see Atletico through.

No Maradona who has a broken nose. I ask him what happens and he just winks saying the other guy is worse. Luckily the guys on the pitch completely dominate Leece and we score 4 in the first half to blow them away. Imbriani grabs the first, curling his effort into the far corner. Jardel then grabs 2 in 5 minutes after two defensive lapses. Bellucci then finishes off a fine passing move to make it 4-0. Varini gets one back after a simple flick on from a goal kick puts him through one and one and he slots past Chilavert. In the 85th minute Jardel completes his hattrick with a powerful close range volley.

It’s games like this that are going to stop us from winning the league. We dominate the game but don’t get a goal and get caught out at the death by a scrappy goal from Brescia captain Bizzarri. So frustrating!

Another game we dominate but this time we manage to get the win. In the first half Maradona is dazzling! He has the ball in the net after 4 minutes but it’s ruled out. He produces 3 passes that lead to good chances which we waste. In the second half Maradona gets his assist playing through Bellucci who scoops it over Sereni, who had a fantastic game by the way.

A fantastic away rout in Turin. Maradona and Bellucci run riot in the first half. Maradona lays off for Bellucci to hammer home the opener. Cavaco then plays a beauty of a cross into the area which Bellucci prods home nicely. Bellucci then sets up Maradona to make it 3-0. In the second half they grab a goal back but Bellucci makes it 4-1 straight from kickoff then Maradona plays a cross field ball which Cavaco taps home for 5-1.

We are starting our games so strongly at the moment and it’s really helping us win games. Maradona is magic again in the first half. His first comes from a wonderful, curling cross from Imbriani which Maradona volleys home from 6 yards. His second is individual brilliance as he waltzes past 2 players then slots it home for 2-0. 2 minutes later Beto breaks through and scores a 3rd. In the second half we relax too much and allow Di Biagio a goal before he sends through Totti to make it 3-2. We sure things up after that and see out the win.

Tough one to take this as we battered Inter in this one. All the credit goes to Pagliuca who put on a masterclass of goalkeeping. Imbriani gives us the lead in the 17th minute by cutting inside and hitting a curling shot past Pagliuca’s outstretched glove. We have twice as many shots and shots on target but we come undo thanks to a wonder strike from the wonder man Ronaldo. Tough one to take but I’d have taken a point before the game.

A good solid home win here. We have a really quiet first half with the only highlight being Asanovic playing a one two with Diego and slotting home our opener to make it 1-0. In the second half we up the tempo and a corner drops in the box causing panic. We have a few swings at it before Beto catches it sweetly and it flies into the roof of the net. It kicks off in the last 5 minutes when a freekick is headed home by Blomberg. Then straight from kick off Genoa attack and Jorge dives into a tackle and gets sent off with Genoa scoring from the freekick. A mad end.

A poor game from us. We had good chances but again failed to take them. Maradona was particularly poor upfront today. Hubner scores after just 3 minutes as we might as well be still in the changing rooms. Imbriani continues his good form by gliding through and nutmegging Toldo. We look set for a draw until the 83rd minute when a slip at the back allows Kanchelskis through to fire past a helpless Meier.

Imbriani is my new favourite player. He is grabbing this team by the scruff of the neck and getting us through games. He’s becoming a leader. His first goal comes from a long ball which he brings down and fires home. Maradona then wins a freekick 25 yards out which he smashes into the net with lots of swerve and dip. In the second half Maradona breaks free and lays it off for Imbriani who again glides in to tap home into an empty net.

That’s it for this update. Here is the league table.

We are in a title race guys. Inter are playing well at the moment and Juventus are always there or thereabouts. Brescia are the surprise package and our loss to them doesn’t seem so bad now. Join me next time as we look to keep pace with the leaders.
