A Legend Returns – Part 9: Diego il Mago | @FMCM_FC

What’s Naples like at this time of year? I’ll tell you – nervous, because it’s the end of season run in for Nathan and Diego and the title race is on!

Hello everyone and welcome back to Napoli with myself and Diego steering the ship to try and recapture the success Diego had on his first visit to Naples. We currently lie 3rd in the league a point behind Juventus and 11 behind an unbelievable Inter Milan side. Let’s see if we can catch up.

It’s a great start with a dominate win over Brescia. Imbriani gives us the lead after 20 minutes when Maradona’s powerful shot is parried and Imbriani taps it home. In the second half Beto doubles our lead with a lovely curling effort into the corner. Asanovic then wins a corner and whips its in for Jorge to head home powerfully. We switch off towards the end and allow Brescia to pass through us with Giunta finishing the move off nicely.

We only win 1-0 here but it’s a comfortable 1-0 win. We control the game throughout and Piacenza have Cevoli sent off which doesn’t help their cause. Our goal comes after 33 minutes when Bellucci flicks on a long ball and surprisingly it’s Crasson from right back running on to it to smash it low in the goal. A great strike to win the game.

Another good win for us here. Maradona is the star of the of show scoring 2 goals in 10 minutes. The first is a trademark individual effort as he waltz through the defence and then dinks a shot over Casazza. His second comes from a great through ball from Imbriani which Maradona powers home for 2-0.

A hugely boring game. Roma hit the post a couple times and we have about 7 corners but we can’t make anything of them. That’s about as entertaining as it gets.

Huge result as we batter table toppers Inter. Zanetti gives them the lead in the 2nd minute and I’m thinking it’s going to be a long afternoon. I’m right in a way as it’s a long afternoon for Inter as we tear them apart. Maradona is central to it all as he sets up Longo for the equaliser. In the second half Longo sets up Maradona who gives us the lead and then produces a stunning volley from a deflected shot to make it 3-1. Blomberg then adds the gloss with a well placed header from a corner. We are 4 points behind Inter with 2 to play. Level on points with Juventus who are 3rd and 2 in front of Milan who are 4th. It’s close!

Another win but we do our best to throw it away at the end. Bellucci plays a ball through the middle which Imbriani chases through and toe pokes past Turci. Maradona then scores from just inside the box then plays a ball over the top for Bellucci to rifle home. In the second half we sit back and Genoa nearly get it back to level terms but they leave it just too late. Inter win their game which means they win the league. We just need to match Juventus’ result to seal 2nd place.

It’s a good win in our final game as we beat Fiorentina 1-0. Maradona gets the goal with the last kick of the first half after some good work from Bellucci to hold up the ball and play it through for Diego. Fiorentina hammer us in the second half looking for an equaliser but we stand firm and get all 3 points.

That’s season 2 done. Let’s have a look at the league table and player stats.

A very good season sees us finish runners to a dominate Inter who stumbled over the line towards the end. Juventus finish 3rd but did win the Champions League as well so a great effort from them.

Imbriani was our stand out performer and he was majestic throughout the season. Diego managed a decent 7.34 but I always thought he wasn’t performing. Maybe I’m expecting too much from him?

21 goals for Diego gives him top scorer

19 assists as well is a fantastic season to be fair to Diego. He is the King of Naples. We just need some trophies now.

So join me next time as we go on the hunt for silverware with Diego and the troops and hopefully some new additions.
