A Legend Returns – Part 18: Failure | @FMCM_FC

With that wonderful four day weekend drifting away, here’s Nathan to light up your Tuesday. Except it’s not really going to plan…

Evening everyone and welcome along for another dose of Diego in Naples. The plan is to win Serie A and replicate the glory days Maradona brought to Naples first time round. We our at the end of our 4th season and we are in a real struggle to finish in the top 4. We crashed out of the Coppa Italia in the Quarter Finals and the Champions League in the group stage. We have a handful of games left to try and get a top 4 spot so let’s see how we go.

It’s a good start to this update. Obviously the keeper getting sent off for wiping Bellucci out is a massive help. Bucci comes on though and plays a blinder which is typical of this game. He saves the pen to get him started on his 9 rating. We manage to grab the lead when Maradona slips through Bellucci who slots it past Bucci. We batter Lecce in the 2nd half and we finally grab a game sealing 2nd when Buonocore fires home a rebound from just inside the box.

This is a sackable result. No disrespect to Cesena who are flying in 8th place but we should be steam rolling them. We take the lead when Bellucci picks out the run of Imbriani who takes it down and gracefully prods it past Palombo. 10 minutes later we are served our Suppa when he taps home a rebound from Meier’s parry. We go ahead again when Coridon’s deep cross is headed home by D’Alessio. Cesena equalise again in the same minute literally going right up the pitch from kickoff and Abdellaoui fires a powerful shot past Meier. The second half is a bore fest with nothing going on until the 87th minute when a Cesena corner is headed home by Tarozzi. Nightmare result.

A ray of hope as we comfortably beat struggling Brescia. Bellucci gives us the lead as he nods in a deflected shot after a big scramble in the box. Nevland gives us our second before half time thanks to some good work from Bellucci who shrugs off his marker and lays it on a plate for Nevland to smash home from close range. We control the second half and see out the win.

Another win but we were poor in the first half. Also another keeper winning Man of the Match against us which is frustrating. Lucchese take an early when a cross drops in the box and causes mayhem before Wome swings a boot at it and it rifles into the top corner. I go ballistic at half time and it seems to work with Diego hammering home the equaliser quickly followed by Buonocore tapping home Bellucci’s cross. Bellucci seals all 3 points at the death by nutmegging Squizzi.

This result kills our top 4 ambitions. The goal is well worked by Sampdoria to be fair. A lovely passing move with Signori applying the flick for Billio who volleys it past Meier. We offer nothing in return and just watch the game go by going through the motions. A real disappointing performance.

We get soundly beaten to finish the season by Roma. We take the lead after a fast start when Bellucci picks out Nevland who fires past Chimenti. That’s as good as it gets for us though as Roma step through the gears. Ambrosi curls in a beauty of a cross which Binotto heads home. 7 minutes later Binotto is played through the middle and megs Meier to give Roma the lead. In the last 10 minutes Montella breaks free on the counter attack and lashes home Roma’s third which seals a deserved win.

Let’s have a look at the final league table.

We finish sixth which is our lowest position so far and a really bad finish for us. Which leads to this.

So it turns out myself and Diego can’t return the glory days to Naples. Maybe you guys can though so why not dive into the database and put Diego back in the Napoli team and have a go yourself. Hope you’ve enjoyed the journey and I look forward to the next adventure in the CM World.

Huge thanks for Nathan for these 18 weeks of episodes, a great idea which has been entertaining throughout. I hope we’ll see Nathan’s work around CM9798.co.uk again in the future
